Greg Anderson qualifies No. 1 for the 42nd time
CHANDLER, Ariz. (February 25, 2006) - While the rest of the country may
be suffering from the effects of winter, Phoenix, the site of this
weekend's 22nd annual NHRA Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals, had clear
skies, warm days and cool nights. A prefect setting for the four
qualifying rounds leading up to tomorrow's eliminations.
For Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment
Pro Stock Pontiac GTO, the weather has proved A-OK. After watching his
teammate Jason Line run a 6.684 pass in the final qualifying pass, the
Minnesota-born, North Carolina-transplant vaulted to the No. 1
qualifying spot on the final qualifying ladder, running an elapsed time
of 6.671 seconds at 206.83 mph. It was the 42nd career No. 1 for
Anderson and his second at Firebird International Raceway.
"It certainly wasn't our plan to wait until the weather got the worst
and the track got the hottest to make our best run," said Anderson
following qualifying. "We struggled all weekend with the setup of our
Summit Pontiac. Until that final round, we hadn't made a clean run down
the track. We missed on the setup. The last lap was real close and
that's definitely a confidence builder for tomorrow."
In the opening round of eliminations tomorrow, Anderson is paired
against Allen Johnson who qualified No. 16 (6.730/205.29). Anderson, the
three-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion (2003-2005), will be looking
for his 41st career win. The pair has met a total of 18 times with
Anderson turning on the win light 15 times.
Anderson begins his quest for the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals Top
Fuel title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11
a.m. All times are local Phoenix time (MST) and subject to change at
anytime.
