'Hot Rod' Fuller sets a high mark for Phoenix
PHOENIX (Feb. 21) - Top Fuel driver "Hot Rod" Fuller has set his sights on
Firebird International Raceway in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler to notch
his first win of the 2006 POWERade drag racing season.
"Racing in the desert comes natural to me," said Fuller, a Las Vegas
resident. "We posted some great numbers in preseason testing at Firebird and
expect the same kind of results, if not better this time through."
The David Powers Motorsports / Valvoline Top Fuel dragster scorched the
quarter-mile with the third quickest time in preseason testing at Firebird
and posted a fifth-place qualifying effort at the season opener in Pomona,
Calif.
After exiting the CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals in Pomona in the
second round of eliminations, crew chief Lee Beard was optimistic about
Phoenix. "We set the car up a little too soft in Pomona," Beard said. "Track
temperatures were in the 90s and we felt it wouldn't hold much more than we
gave it, but as it turned out it would have."
Fuller heads into this weekend's Checker, Schuck's and Kragen NHRA Nationals
seventh in points and optimistic about the outcome. "The season opener is
always a challenge," Fuller said. "Trying to sort out off-season tweaks can
give the entire team headaches but we really feel that we figured everything
out in Pomona. We're ready for Phoenix and I think we have as good a chance
to win as anyone."
The Checker, Schuck's and Kragen NHRA Nationals is set to run Feb. 24-26 at
Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz. Qualifying and
eliminations of the event will be carried in same-day coverage on ESPN2.
