MINDY’S MONDAY MINUTE
NASCAR Opens in Daytona
Moorpark, Calif. - (February 20, 2006) The 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck,
Busch and Nextel Cup series are now officially underway after the weekend’s
activities at the illustrious Daytona International Speedway.
The NASCAR season started with the Craftsman Truck Series under the lights
Friday night during the GM Flex Fuel 250.
The Ringers teams of Orleans Racing and Billy Ballew Motorsports had great
showings early on, but were caught up in incidents later on in the race.
With only three laps to go, Brendan Gaughan, driver of the No. 77 Orleans
Dodge, thought he had a great finish in the bag, but contact with another truck
diminished those hopes as he piloted his battered No. 77 across the finish
line in 24th.
Billy Ballew Motorsports driver Kyle Krisiloff was attempting to avoid a
wreck in the later laps of the GM Flex Fuel 250 when he was hit from behind,
ending his night and scoring him in 28th.
In Busch Series action, two racers protected with UnderX by Ringers
qualified for the race, but didn’t have the finishes they were probably hoping for.
While Tracy Hines finished 20th and completed every lap, Hines has high
expectations in his new ride with FitzBradshaw Racing.
Paul Menard had a good qualifying run, but got tangled up with Carl Edwards,
Jason Leffler and A.J. Foyt IV on lap 38, retiring him to the garage for
more than an hour of repairs. By the time the crew was done, Menard was 40 laps
down and finished 38th in the Hershey Kissables 300.
On Sunday, the Ringers team of Penske Racing South did exceptionally well
for a restrictor plate racetrack.
Ryan Newman and his new teammate Kurt Busch worked great together on
drafting through the field heading towards the front.
But, late in the race, Busch was caught up in a four-car wreck on lap 187
that took him out of contention for his first win or top-10 finish for Penske
Racing and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge team.
However, Newman continued with a strong run and challenged eventual Daytona
500 winner Jimmie Johnson for the win in the closing laps of the race.
Newman, protected with UnderX by Ringers, brought home a third place finish
in the first race of the season.
All three NASCAR series head to sunny California Speedway this weekend in
Fontana, Calif., for their respective races.
