Driver News - Vincec confirms race commitments for 2006
Stouffville, Ontario - February 17, 2006 - The first race in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship (SRFKC) might be three months away, but that has not stopped 14 year old Mike Vincec from getting ready the best way possible... on the track.Vincec, the 2005 SRFKC Junior Rotax Champion, is making the move to the senior ranks in 2006 and has been campaigning his new Cameron Motorsports, CRG, SwedeTech powered ICC on the Florida Winter Tour. He has just returned from the most recent event at Moroso with some very strong results. "The Winter Tour is a great warmup for the season", notes Mike in a recent interview. "Our goal this season is to be at the front in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Championship series so any chance to test, especially under race conditions, is a real plus."The team has just returned from round two at Moroso Motorsports Park where Vincec picked up some points with 5th and 6th place finishes in races 3 and 4 respectively. Not bad results when you are up against some seasoned ICC drivers. "We were glad to make up some ground after some disappointment at Homestead."
Vincec had posted some pretty impressive times in the opening rounds and was certainly in the hunt at Moroso qualifying 4th for both races. On Sunday, he was just 28/100ths off pole. "I think maybe the cooler weather on Sunday played into our hands for qualifying", offered the young driver. "It was pretty close most of the race and I was in a real fight for a podium position but trying to gain that spot caused me to overdrive and the tires went away. "Unable to hold on in the closing laps, Vincec fell back to finish in sixth place. Following this event, Mike sits seventh overall in tour points with two races to go.
There are more races on tap before the Sunoco Ron Fellows Championship Series including the opening round of the Snap-On Stars of Karting Series presented by the IRL (Stars) at Norman, Oklahoma (March 18-19). "We will be on the road for three weeks starting with the Winter Tour at Ocala, FL., then off to Charlotte, NC for a World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer's Cup event before heading to the Stars Race of the Americas. April and May will be spent testing in preparation for the first SRFKC race at Hamilton's Cameron Motorsports Park.
"I am really looking forward to running the Barrie Grand Prix in the Sunoco Ron Fellows series", said Mike. "It is one of the biggest and best races in kart racing and I am looking forward to running both the ICC and Rotax on a tough and challenging circuit."
In support of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship Series, Mike, the reigning Rotax Junior Champion, will be making an appearance at the Toronto International Auto Show in a special display by Sunoco to promote the series. The show runs from February 17th to the 26th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Mike will be at the Sunoco booth on Saturday, February 25th from 3-8 p.m.
