Bombardier to Supply Additional 40 Metro Cars to Metronet Rail in the UK

MONTREAL - Feb. 10, 2006: Bombardier Transportation has been awarded a variation contract by Metronet Rail in the United Kingdom for an additional 40 metro cars for the new fleet which will operate on the London Underground. This takes the total number of cars ordered under this contract to 1,778. The value of the additional contract is approximately $70 million US (58 million euros) and also includes maintenance of the 40 cars until 2018. Bombardier will manufacture the additional cars at its plant in Derby, United Kingdom.

This variation contract is in addition to the original contract awarded to Bombardier by Metronet in April 2003 worth approximately $6 billion US dollars (5 billion euros). The original contracts included project management services, the supply of 1,738 metro cars and new signalling systems for the Victoria line and sub-surface lines, plus maintenance of the new trains.

Working in partnership with London Underground, Metronet has taken over responsibility for upgrading, replacing and maintaining nine of the twelve lines on the entire network and will spend $30 billion US during its 30-year contract. Some $12 billion US of this will be spent during the first 7.5 years - on new trains, new track, new signalling and refurbished and modernised stations.
