NEW CHAPTER FOR MOPAR NHRA PRO STOCKERS TO BEGIN AT POMONA
Center Line, Mich. - Team Mopar's NHRA Pro Stock competitors have seen a lot
of change in the past few weeks. A facelift for the team's cars, a new face in
the mix, and a lot of testing have all taken place. Will all this activity
shake Allen Johnson, Richie Stevens Jr., and Shaun Carlson?
Don't bet on it.
Johnson, the steadfast veteran of the trio, is primed to return to his J&J
Racing Team Mopar Dodge Stratus R/T for the 2006 season. Having won at Phoenix
last season and finishing 11th in NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Series points,
Johnson is looking to kick off the season in typical steady style at Pomona later
this week.
"We take each race step by step, "Johnson said. "At Pomona, the first step is
to qualify. The second step is to get lane choice. The third step is to win
round one. The fourth is to win round two. Steady and calculated, that's our
agenda for Pomona. We hope to step our way right to a victory."
Johnson's team has been hard at work testing over the past few months, most
recently at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Greeneville, Tenn.,
native is hoping that the strong testing numbers the team posted will carry over
to this weekend's event.
"We're very pleased with our testing sessions," Johnson said. "We're getting
a new motor this week that we're told will be one of the best yet. Mopar and
Dodge, along with our R&D efforts, have really stepped things up for this
season. We're going to be one of the last teams to wrap up testing and, hopefully,
all that work will pay off."
Johnson will be joined on the quarter-mile by Don Schumacher Racing's Stevens
Jr., and Carlson. Stevens Jr., will look to top his eighth-place finish in
the 2005 NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Series points chase, as well as earn his first
victory under the Don Schumacher Racing banner. The New Orleans, La., native
had a strong showing in last weekend's Inaugural Pontiac Pro Stock Showdown at
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, advancing to the semifinal round before
seeing his day come to an end.
Carlson will make his full-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Series debut in this
week's opener at Pomona Raceway. The California hotshoe will bring a new
element into the mix for Team Mopar, as his background includes championship runs
on the NHRA Sport Compact Racing Series scene. This will not be Carlson's first
pro stock appearance at Pomona Raceway, as he subbed for an injured Darrell
Alderman with J&J Racing in 2004. Carlson advanced to the second round in the
run.
Mopar's NHRA Pro Stockers will unveil a new paint scheme at Pomona Raceway
this weekend. All three machines will carry a new look for 2006, with Stevens
Jr.'s, and Johnson's entries sporting the Mopar "Midnight Camo" design.
Carlson's Team Mopar/SRT Dodge Stratus will carry a fire-red version of the scheme,
adorned with the SRT logo of the Dodge SRT program.
The 46th annual NHRA Winternationals will kick off on Thursday, February 9,
with the first round of professional qualifying scheduled for 2 p.m. PST.
Qualifying will continue on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11, with the finals
scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PST on Sunday, February 12.
