Volkswagen and Sanyo Team Up To Develop Hybrid Battery Systems
JAPAN - Feb. 3, 2006: Volkswagen and Sanyo Electric have agreed to co-develop next generation nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery systems for hybrid electric vehicles.
This isn't the first such partnership for Sanyo who already provides HEV batteries for Ford’s Escape Hybrid and Honda’s Accord Hybrid in the North American market. This is Sanyo’s first HEV battery systems supply deal with a European car-maker.
The VW/SE next generation Ni-MH batteries aim to meet automaker needs for higher output power and higher durability through advanced battery system technologies, such as battery electronic control units and technology that reduces size and weight.
Based on its new vision Think GAIA, SANYO is continuing to push environment-friendly businesses such as HEV battery systems and offer Global Energy Solutions with its outstanding rechargeable battery technologies. In a newspaper report, Sanyo stated that the agreement is a step in its plan to achieve half of the worldwide market for hybrid batteries.
