WyoTech-West Sacramento to Host Regional SkillsUSA Competition
More Than 300 Northern California High School Students Gather to Compete in a Variety of Mechanical Skills
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 2 -- WyoTech-West Sacramento will host the Northern California Regional SkillsUSA Competition on Saturday, February 4, 2006, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST, immediately followed by a one-hour awards ceremony.
More than 300 high school students throughout Northern California will gather for a hands-on competition to test their skills in a variety of specialized areas, including computer animated drafting, automotive service technology, auto body welding and much more. Projects will be judged by industry professionals who offer practical, first-hand feedback to student participants. Through the SkillsUSA program and competitions, students gain experience in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development.
WyoTech will grant three $1,000 scholarships in the areas of automotive, auto body and welding at this Saturday's regional competition. Winners of this trial will advance to the state level, and potentially, the national championship, where top performers will receive scholarship awards, tools, and other prizes.
"We are proud to partner with SkillsUSA and bring this year's event to our campus and the community of West Sacramento," said Jeff Dorricott, President of WyoTech-West Sacramento. "WyoTech's leading-edge programs produce some of the best mechanical technicians world-wide. Our school's mantra -- Moving into the Future -- seems a fitting tribute to these aspiring students who showcase their talents and skills as they prepare for successful careers in their chosen field."
As host, WyoTech will provide tools, computers, welding machines and other equipment and supplies as well as staging for the ceremony, in addition to the scholarship awards. The WyoTech-West Sacramento campus, located at 980 Riverside Parkway in West Sacramento, opened its doors in January 2004. The 160,000 square foot facility has more than 110,000 square feet of state-of-the-art shop space. The school offers programs in Automotive Technology, Advanced Automotive Diagnostics, Applied Service Management, Chassis Fabrication and High Performance Engines, and Street Rod and Custom Fabrication. WyoTech is part of the Titan Schools division of Corinthian Colleges, Inc.
