Financial Contributions to the Fourth Annual Volvo for life Awards Heroes Total $1 Million, Include a Volvo Car for Life

NEW YORK, Jan. 27 -- Do you know a Wyoming hometown hero seeking to improve the safety, quality of life and/or environment of others? Volvo Cars of North America is calling on people statewide to nominate a hero they know in the nation's largest annual search for and celebration of everyday heroes. One overall winner, to be named "America's Greatest Hometown Hero," will receive a new car every three years for life.

Now in its fourth year, the Volvo for life Awards initiative honors hometown heroes with $1 million in financial contributions. Each year Volvo calls on people to nominate a hero that they know doing the extraordinary in the areas of safety, quality of life or environment. Through Jan. 31, 2006, visit www.volvoforlifeawards.com to nominate a Wyoming hero. The initiative has recognized nearly 10,000 individuals from all 50 states for their extraordinary service since its inception in 2001.

Nominees from 49 states have been nominated; Wyoming is the only state not represented.

Volvo's goal is to highlight and honor the remarkable accomplishments people make in their communities on a daily basis. Previous winners include an amputee who is working to collect and donate used but reusable limbs to amputees overseas; a domestic abuse survivor helping American women escape abusive relationships while living abroad; and an activist bringing timber proponents and environmentalists together to revitalize her community and the environment.

In March, Volvo will announce the names of 100 semi-finalists and honor their individual accomplishments with a Certificate of Merit. Three finalists in each nomination category then will be selected.

A panel of distinguished judges representing some of the world's foremost experts on conscience, care and character -- including Hank Aaron, Bill Bradley, Richard Branson, Caroline Kennedy, Maya Lin, Paul Newman, Sally Ride, Eunice Kennedy Shriver and last year's top winner Hope Bevilhymer -- will name one winner for each of the three categories. The category winners each will receive $50,000 to be donated to the charities of their choice. The remaining six finalists each will receive a $25,000 charitable donation.

On April 12, Volvo will honor the three category winners at the Volvo for life Awards Ceremony in New York City at the Rainbow Room. Each year the event features top music entertainment and a celebrity host, as well as documentaries profiling the category winners. The overall winner, selected by the judges, will be named "America's Greatest Hometown Hero" and presented with a Volvo car every three years for the rest of his or her life.
