DEARBORN, Mich.--Jan. 20, 2006--The Henry Ford Academy, a charter high school, part of The Henry Ford in Dearborn, has named its museum campus, the Steven K. Hamp Campus, it was announced Tuesday night in a tribute ceremony to Hamp, the former president of The Henry Ford. Patricia Mooradian, president of The Henry Ford and Cora Christmas, principal of Henry Ford Academy presented Hamp with the distinction before a crowd of more than 300 who gathered for the evening's festivities in Henry Ford Museum. Those in attendance included William Clay Ford Sr., U.S. Congressman John Dingell, Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido and Bill Ford, Jr."Because of the lasting influence Steve has had on this organization, the Board of Trustees and the staff of The Henry Ford, thought it appropriate to recognize his many contributions in a more permanent way," said Mooradian.
In addition to the Academy campus naming, Mooradian also announced the establishment of the Steven K. Hamp Endowment for Education Programs. This new endowment fund will provide support for The Henry Ford's education programs including, but not limited to, the Youth Mentorship Program, scholarships or subsidies for Henry Ford Academy students and youth programs and camps.
"Steve's devotion to education extended beyond the development of a charter school in the midst of this National Historic Landmark," said Mooradian. "He cared deeply about the education programs this institution offered and their vulnerability due to external economic conditions and budget fluctuations."
At the time of the endowment announcement, The Henry Ford received more than $3.5 million in pledges for this new fund.
Hamp was president of The Henry Ford from 1996 to 2005. He stepped down last November to accept a position at Ford Motor Company as vice president and chief of staff, reporting to Ford Chairman and CEO Bill Ford.
