ZiLOG's New Microcontrollers for Motor Control Applications a Big Hit!

Company Wins Control Engineering Magazine Editor's Choice Award

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 18 -- ZiLOG(R), Inc. , a leading provider of microcontrollers and universal remote control solutions announced today that its recently-launched Z8 Encore! MC(TM) family of microcontrollers has been named a winner in Control Engineering Magazine's 19th annual Editors' Choice Awards. Published 12 times a year, Control Engineering is a U.S. based magazine for engineers in all industries who buy, specify, design and maintain automation, control and instrumentation devices, networks, systems, and software for automated process, manufacturing, and hybrid solutions. Additional content is also published daily on the web and weekly in electronic newsletters. The franchise also includes Control Engineering Europe, Control Engineering China, Control Engineering Poland, and Control Engineering Russia.

During 2005, Control Engineering's editors evaluated thousands of nominated products based on service to the industry, technological advancement, and market impact to select the winners of the Editors' Choice Awards. 45 Winners were chosen in eight categories. The Z8 Encore! MC family, launched in October 2005, targets motor control applications, including Brushless DC (BLDC) and AC Induction motor control sectors. It has already generated a great deal of interest and success in these markets, resulting in a number of significant design wins.

According to Mark Hoske, Editor-in-Chief of Control Engineering, the Z8 Encore! MC caught the eye of the editorial team because of its unique integrated feature set, which brings components such as an optimized PWM module, a fast 2.5mus A/D converter with a time stamp, an operational amplifier, and multiple communication engines, 'on chip.' In addition, the advanced phase lock loop routines created by ZiLOG for the Z8 Encore! MC tie into these 'on chip' features to help free up valuable CPU resources, reduce the unit's overall bill of materials and conserve energy.

"That a globally respected publication like Control Engineering has nominated and selected our new motor control family of MCUs for this prestigious award is a great testament to the efforts of our entire workforce," noted Jim Thorburn, chairman and CEO of ZiLOG. "It's fantastic news for our company and a perfect way to start 2006. Equally important, it is a further validation of the growing success and traction of our product roadmap, which we continue to expand in markets and applications where we can help customers succeed."

Following the Editors' Choice award, the Z8 Encore! MC goes forward to be considered for Control Engineering's second annual Engineers' Choice Awards. Subscribers to the publication vote for their own favorites from among the editors' selections to determine the winner in each of eight product categories. These eight winners will be revealed during the Editors' Choice awards ceremony, held during National Manufacturing Week, March 21-23, in Chicago.
