Johnson Controls Showcases Perimeter Overhead System Concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit
Integrated Trim Concept Offers Advanced Level of Flexibility, Enabling Automakers to Boost Design and Safety Features
DETROIT, Jan. 8 -- When it comes to providing fresh content at a lower cost, Johnson Controls is looking up...literally. The company is unveiling the Perimeter Overhead System concept - its future vision of vehicle overhead systems - at the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) this week in Detroit. The Perimeter Overhead System features a sturdy plastic trim that frames the headliner of a vehicle, allowing designers to make the most of overhead space.
A totally new approach to overhead systems, the concept offers more flexibility in product design and content. The plastic trim expands component integration and location opportunities, allowing designers more freedom when integrating consumer-use points. This concept from Johnson Controls is among the dozens of innovations being highlighted at the company's NAIAS product and technology exhibit in room D2-15 of Detroit's Cobo Center.
"Based on our research and customer feedback, we've created a new approach for overhead systems that can take the vehicle interior to the next level, while at the same time lowering cost," said Byron Foster, group vice president, Interiors - North America for Johnson Controls. "Our concept offers significant benefits to both stylists and vehicle buyers, by providing advanced design flexibility and packaging solutions for side curtain airbags and added features. The system also reduces the number of parts in the assembly process."
The increased sturdiness of the Johnson Controls Perimeter Overhead System concept enables designers to:
-Add safety features to the headliner - such as side curtain airbags - and deliver them pre-assembled to automakers; -Utilize injection molding, a wide variety of fabrics and even Johnson Controls' family of innovative CrafTec interior processes to broaden the design and functionality of the headliner; -Add consumer-use points such as overhead lights, coat hangers and handles in a variety of new areas; and -Mold parts directly into the overhead system, reducing the number of overall parts in assembly.
According to Foster, the Perimeter Overhead System concept is slated to be ready for production in 2010 across all vehicle segments.
