Freescale Semiconductor's Cable-Free USB Chosen as a Finalist for CNET ''Best of CES'' Award; Freescale's Ultra-Wideband Solution Unleashes USB Devices from Cables

LAS VEGAS--Jan. 6, 2006--Freescale Semiconductor has been selected as a finalist in this year's CNET Best of CES Awards for its Cable-Free USB solution in the "Emerging Technologies" category.

The Cable-Free USB solution, powered by Freescale's Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, enables an instant "plug-and-play" wireless connection between any USB 2.0 certified devices.

Digital cameras, MP3 players, digital camcorders, cellular phones, large screen displays, printers, projectors, set-top boxes, computers and more can achieve instant wireless connections with Cable-Free USB.

Freescale's UWB-enabled Cable-Free USB solution is integrated into consumer devices such as those from Belkin Corporation and Gefen Inc. announced at CES. Using Cable-Free USB powered by Freescale's UWB, these devices eliminate USB cable connections to wirelessly stream data, video and audio between USB-equipped consumer products. Belkin's Cable-Free USB hub was nominated as a CNET Best of CES Awards finalist in the "Peripherals" category.

"The CNET Best of CES Awards finalist nomination is an outstanding recognition of Freescale's UWB leadership," said Martin Rofheart, director of the UWB Operations for Freescale. "We are showcasing Freescale's UWB solutions in eight different locations across the CES show floor, highlighting the many applications UWB enables."

The Best of CES Awards, which are produced and judged by CNET, recognize the hottest products at the show in 12 categories, plus Best of Show and People's Voice awards. Finalists were chosen from more than 700 submissions and judged on their promise to pioneer a new category, to establish an emerging category, or to take an existing category to a new level; to excite consumers with their style, innovation, usefulness, ease of use, and/or capacity to entertain; to endow their owner with a certain cachet -- the "cool" factor; to work readily with other products in a consumer's life; and to make their way into everyday life.

The 12 categories include car tech; cell phones, smart phones, and PDAs; computers; digital photo and video; gaming; home audio; home video; MP3 and portable video; monitors, printers, burners, and storage; networking; TVs; and emerging technologies. Videos of the finalists showcasing their technologies can be found at http://ces.cnet.com. Winners will be announced at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show on Saturday, January 7, at 2 p.m. live on the CNET stage in the South Hall upper lobby.

About Cable-Free USB

Cable-Free USB is powered by Freescale's UWB chipset and the ExtremeUSB solution from Icron Technologies Corporation enabling a zero-install wireless USB solution. Unlike other efforts to create an entirely new USB standard to incorporate UWB technology, Freescale and Icron's USB-over-UWB wireless solution is designed to support existing USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices in the market today. This gives users a "plug and play" experience right out of the box.

About Ultra-Wideband

Freescale's UWB solutions enable high rate transfer of video, audio and data streams wirelessly. UWB brings a wireless option to auto, consumer electronics and PC/peripheral manufacturers. For example, an MPEG2 movie or HDTV stream can be broadcast in real-time wirelessly. This allows consumers new freedom in the use of multimedia-centric products, as they no longer need to be connected with wires.
