For 7th Annual Shav Glick Award
Los Angeles, CA, December 5, 2005 -- Phil Hill, Roger Penske,
Carroll Shelby, Ivan Stewart and Mickey Thompson have been
nominated for the seventh annual Eagle One-Shav Glick Award.
Presented by appearance care products company Eagle One,
the award recognizes distinguished contribution to motorsports
in California. Previous winners were Dan Gurney, Wally Parks,
Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears, Les Richter and J.C. Agajanian.
Named in honor of the long-time motorsports writer for the Los
Angeles Times, a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, the
award will be presented during pre-race ceremonies at the NASCAR
Auto Club 500, February 26, at California Speedway.
Phil Hill, in 1961, became the first American to win a Formula One
world championship. He also won the 24 Hours of LeMans three
times, 12 Hours of Sebring three times and Grand Prix of Italy twice.
Penske, a motor racing magnate, built and operated California Speedway
before selling it to International Speedway Corp. Shelby won the
24 Hours of LeMans and set land speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats
driving an Austin Healey. As a team manager, he helped Ford GT win the
World Grand Touring title. He is also the designer and builder of the
Shelby Cobra, considered one of the finest sports cars ever created.
Ivan Stewart won seventeen Baja 500's, three Baja 1000's and four
SCORE world championships. Mickey Thompson, who died in 1989,
was the first to run a 6-second funny car dragster and first to build a
stock block rear engine car for the Indianapolis 500. He once held
more speed and endurance records than anyone and was the first
American to break the 400 mph barrier on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
The judging panel includes national and California motorsports writers.
