``California Manufacturers Leading the Way'' Series Recognizes New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.; NUMMI Creates Widespread Positive Economic Ripple Effect in State
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Dec. 1, 2005--The California Manufacturers & Technology Association (CMTA) this week published the first edition of its "California Manufacturers Leading the Way" (CMLW) series and unveiled New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) of Fremont, California as the first of many companies to be highlighted for their tremendous positive economic and social impact on the state. You can download a pdf of printed publication at www.cmta.net/cmlw.With over 1,000 suppliers, a $65,000 average factory worker wage, and more than $3.1 billion invested in California, NUMMI's Fremont operation creates a widespread economic ripple effect across the state.
"This series will demonstrate the large economic footprint manufacturers leave on the local and statewide community," said CMTA president Jack Stewart. "Without NUMMI and other manufacturers, the state has fewer jobs, lower salaries and less revenue."
NUMMI employs 5,500 workers from diverse backgrounds and provides high quality training and benefits for its employees. NUMMI generates roughly 20,000 California jobs overall through a supply chain that reaches 36 counties and increases sales and payroll taxes that support vital local services.
A venture of Toyota and General Motors, NUMMI has been the only auto manufacturer in California since the early 1990's. It produces the Corolla and Tacoma for Toyota and the Pontiac Vibe for GM.
"Unfortunately, our competitors in other states now have a large cost advantage. NUMMI and its 1,000 California suppliers hope that California policymakers will help level the playing field so we can continue to operate in the state, providing communities with tremendous social and economic advantages," said NUMMI President Yukio Azuma.
The CMLW will be distributed to California legislators and regulators, statewide media, the Governor's administration, manufacturers, trade unions and others with a specific interest in the economic growth of California.
A NUMMI representative is available for interviews, plant tours and b-roll video for news broadcasts (NUMMI media contact: Kelley McKenzie 510-770-4045).
The next CMLW will be released in early 2006.
