Auto Club, UCLA and LAUSD Show off Successful Geography Curriculum in Challenged South Los Angeles High School
--Automobile Club of Southern California:WHO: The Automobile Club of Southern California, the UCLA History-Geography Project, L.A. City Councilmember Jan Perry, and faculty and students of Fremont High School WHAT: Presentation of final projects by the 10th-grade students of teacher Janet Tran, who have been using Auto Club maps, photographs and archival materials in an innovative curriculum developed in conjunction with the Auto Club and the UCLA History-Geography Project. WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. WHERE: Fremont High School, 7676 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles. Please check in at the Principal's Office North. WHY: Fremont High School is in a part of Los Angeles where low expectations abound. Against that background, a new learning environment is flowering. Using the resources of the Auto Club archives and the UCLA History-Geography Project, Fremont's Social Studies students have become excited about the study of Los Angeles and its history after learning with a new series of lessons called "Then and Now - Life Before and After the Industrial Revolution." Assignment Editors note: Reporters will see how students used historical images to enhance their knowledge of history and geography. Teachers and students are available for interviews in addition to the Auto Club's historian and archivist and officials of the UCLA Geography Project.
