Wickens to compete in Race of Champions
Robert Wickens will compete in Paris as part of ROC
HAMILTON, ONTARIO November 17, 2005; Cameron Motorsports lead driver Robert Wickens has
announced he has received an invitation to compete in Paris, France on Dec
3, 2005 as part of the Race of Champions. "This is an unbelievable
opportunity for me," Wickens said. "This is one of the biggest motorsport
events in the world, and I can wait to get to Paris."
Only four drivers have been invited to compete in Paris, of which Wickens
is not only the youngest, but also the only one from North America. Three
drivers in this talented quartet of youngsters claimed their first major
title in Formula racing this past season by winning one of the four
regional Formula BMW series. Nicholas Huelkenberg (18) took the title in
the German Formula BMW ADAC Championship, while Dean Smith (17) won the UK
Championship and Salman Al Khalifa (23) took top honours in Asia. Wickens
(16) was in contention for the Formula BMW USA title right up to the season
final and proved the most consistent driver of the season.
Wickens will compete in a support event for the Nation's Cup Race of
Champions in Formula BMW's that will be brought up from the FBMW Driver
Training Center in Valencia, Spain.
"I must thank Formula BMW for this opportunity. It would be great just to
see the event, but to get a chance to compete in a FBMW there is just
awesome," Wickens said after receiving the invitation to compete.
"The Race of Champions is an excellent platform for Formula BMW," says BMW
Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. "Four international Formula BMW talents
will be representing their particular series in Paris. All four of them
have another major appearance lined up for December: at the Formula BMW
World Final in Bahrain they will be competing to win a Formula One test
drive with the BMW Sauber F1 Team."
