Digital Manufacturing Education Centers in Changchun and Zhuhai for Next Generation Automotive Engineers
UGS Grants NX and NX Nastran Software to Digital Manufacturing Education Centers to Help Develop Certified NX Specialists for China's Growing Economy
PLANO, Texas and CHANGCHUN, China, Nov. 17 -- UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, and Jilin University (JLU) today announced the opening of Jilin University/UGS Corp. Digital Manufacturing Education Centers in Changchun and Zhuhai.
The Digital Manufacturing Education Centers have five academic programs focused on China's rapidly growing automotive market, including numerical control, digital manufacturing, mold design, manufacturing process planning and mechtronics. In support of the new Digital Manufacturing Education Centers and the expanded automotive curriculum, UGS is providing JLU with an in-kind grant of UGS' NX(TM) and NX(TM) Nastran software and technical support with a commercial value of US$169 million. The College of Automobile Engineering of Jilin University is a key element for educational and scientific research in China's automobile industry, and is well-known for the earliest Vehicle Engineering program in the country. The college is the only national school with the automobile key discipline in the vehicle field and the first Automobile Model Design center in China. The college also offers six master's degree programs, four doctoral degree programs and post-doctoral programs. Currently, the college has an enrollment of 2,345 undergraduates, 588 graduate students and 213 doctoral students.
The College of Mechanical Science and Engineering of Jilin University consists of five departments and a national teaching base on Mechanical Foundation. The college offers six master's degree programs, four doctoral degree programs and two post-doctoral programs. The college has an enrollment of 2,000 undergraduates, more than 900 graduate students and 200 doctoral students.
"On behalf of Jilin University, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to UGS for providing the leading PLM industry software to us," said Dr. Ji Zhao, professor and vice president of JLU. "The students, faculty and manufacturing communities will be the major benefactors of this innovative software from UGS. Students and researchers in the university will be informed with the latest knowledge of NX CAD/CAE/CAM/CAPP and will design products with an integrated PLM software package. After they pass the NX CAD certification examination and graduate, the students will have opportunities to get jobs and play important roles in Chinese-based automobile companies such as GM and others. Moreover, the APP cooperation between Jilin University and UGS Corp. is of great importance for us to promote the level of teaching and scientific research on mechanical programs, to leverage the advanced technology in the world, to extend our influence at home and abroad and to improve the employment quality of our students."
"UGS is honored to work with JLU in establishing the Digital Manufacturing Education Centers," said Hans-Kurt Lubberstedt, executive vice president, Asia Pacific, UGS. "Innovation and the ability to bring the right products to market quickly are key business drivers for today's most competitive companies. This grant exemplifies UGS' commitment to China and the Chinese automotive industry, as well as the next generation of engineers who will lead the PLM transition initiatives. As a leading supplier of PLM software and services, we are proud to build this partnership and look forward to new opportunities to enhance the value of JLU to Chinese industry and beyond."
UGS was recently selected as the Best PLM Vendor and one of the Top 10 Management Software Venders in China by the Chinese Foreign Trade Economic Association from over 1,000 software venders active in the China market.
The grant to JLU is being made through UGS' Global Opportunities in Product Lifecycle Management (GO PLM) initiative. GO PLM leads the industry in the commercial value of the in-kind grants it provides -- more than US$2 billion in 2004 -- and brings together four complementary community involvement programs focused on academic partnership, regional productivity, youth and displaced worker development and the PACE (Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education) program. GO PLM provides PLM technology to over 845,000 students yearly at nearly 8,200 global institutions, where it is used at every academic level -- from middle schools to graduate engineering research programs.
