BayBio Presents IMPACT Report 2005: 2 Billion Doses Delivered to Patients Annually
SAN FRANCISCO--Nov. 1, 20054, 2005--BayBio today released BayBio:IMPACT 2005, documenting the effect that the Northern California life science industry has on patients' lives everyday:-- More than 240 products on the market are from Northern California saving lives everyday
-- Patients in the U.S. alone have received over 2 billion doses annually from Northern California
-- 200 products are in Phase II/III development in Northern California addressing major unmet medical needs
-- More than a third of all domestic public biotech companies are located in Northern California, representing a collective value of $150 billion and investing close to $4 billion annually in research
-- More companies and employees are focused on life science in Northern California than in any other national or international region
"The life science business is serious and time-consuming requiring massive investment with high risks all around -- when we don't deliver, patients suffer," Bill Young, Chairman & CEO of Monogram Biosciences Inc. (MGRM) and a Member of the Board of BayBio, said. "Northern California's biotech companies have a solid track record of success taking products from the bench to the bedside, and we have only just begun," Dr. Corey Goodman, President & CEO of Renovis Inc. (RNVS) and a Member of the Board of BayBio, added. "If Northern California is to sustain its leadership position and continue to grow in the life science industry, public policy must change at all levels -- from research and development to manufacturing and healthcare delivery," Matt Gardner, President of BayBio, stated. He added: "The regulatory environment can only be improved by government and industry working together. Better government will help us to get cures to patients faster."
The report will be presented to policymakers, media, academia and industry with a discussion of the public policy challenges facing the industry in San Francisco, Calif., on November 14 at 10:00 AM, in Sacramento, Calif., on November 15 at 12:00 noon and in Washington, D.C., on November 17 at 12:00 noon.
