Wimmer shows mettle in Phoenix debut
Avondale, Ariz. – Chris Wimmer finished in 37th position in his Nascar Busch Series debut behind the wheel of the #23 BMAR Chevrolet on Saturday. To the casual observer that might seem like a lackluster beginning, but the final stats don’t tell the whole story.
The race got off to a rough start for Wimmer after he and another car got into an early accident. It would have been easy to pack it in, but the team worked feverishly in the garage to make the car race worthy.
“The crew did an incredible job,” said Wimmer. “After the wreck the entire rear end was off but they jumped in and gave me a car I could take back out on the track.”
Wimmer completed more than 50 more laps before bringing the car into the garage with just over 20 laps remaining. He picked up several positions during the run, but more than that he opened some eyes in the world of racing.
“Chris showed a lot about what kind of driver he is today,” said crew chief Jeff Britt. “The car was drivable, but just barely. He even had to fight it to keep it going straight but at the end of the race he was running laps with cars in the top 20. Not many drivers could do that.”
“Everyone pitched in and helped us turn what could have been a major disaster into a great accomplishment,” said team owner Keith Coleman. “Even Chris was working on the car in the garage to get it back on the track. I couldn’t be prouder of the team than I am right now.”
