1,100 Local High School Students View 'Camile Claudel and Rodin: Fateful Encounter' at the DIA

* Chrysler Group sponsors the educational visits of 27 schools from Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties

* Detroit sculptor Tracy Gorenflo-Sellers will provide a brief lecture to the Milford, Mich., and Detroit high school students; students will create sculptures during the visit

WHAT: More than 1,100 high school students from metro Detroit will visit the "Camille Claudel and Rodin: Fateful Encounter" sculpture exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) by February 5, 2006, when the exhibit ends.

While the exhibition is at the DIA, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund will sponsor museum tours for a total of 27 schools from Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties and provide transportation and lunch for the students.

The Detroit stop is the only U.S. appearance for the collection, which features side-by-side comparisons of the art of Camille Claudel (1864-1943) and Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), whose remarkable sculptures helped shape the artistic legacy of turn-of-the-century Paris. The exhibition includes Rodin's and Claudel's art prior to their meeting; work produced during their initially happy, then stormy relationship; and each one's sculptures after their breakup. The exhibition also highlights some of Rodin's most renowned late masterworks including "Balzac," "The Burghers of Calais" and "The Thinker," through studies in a range of media developed over many years.
