MARK IV Introduces 5.9 GHz Transponder
U.S. DOT Compliant
Coming Soon to a Vehicle Near You
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 -- OTTO on Board(TM), by MARK IV Transportation Technologies brings the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) to life with on-the-road demonstrations during the ITS World Congress. OTTO is the next logical step for electronic toll collection and other applications such as intersection collision warning, curve speed warning, rollover warning, emergency electronic brake lights and many others.
"OTTO on Board is the newest member of MARK IV's technology family and the first to demonstrate the near term viability of the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration," said Martin Capper, president of MARK IV Transportation Technologies and chairman of ITS America.
VII will use 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) as established by the U.S. DOT to move information between vehicles and the roadway as well as directly among moving vehicles to achieve national interoperability among systems.
MARK IV's demonstration will take place at the Innovative Mobility Showcase of the ITS World Congress being held in SBC ball park from November 7 - 10. The demonstrations will utilize an OTTO-equipped bus that will demonstrate:
* OTTO's new 5.9 GHz DSRC technology does not interfere with today's electronic toll collection deployments at 915 MHz and assures an orderly migration to the new U.S. DOT proposed nationally-interoperable technology. * Amber Alert pre-emption of onboard roadway information messaging. * Traffic signal coordination with real-time vehicle requirements (including signal priority).
According to Capper, "OTTO takes the best from the past and provides an orderly evolution to future electronic toll collection and other new public and private applications. It's real evolution. Transition without chaos."
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's DSRC schedule, the decision to deploy would be made in 2008, coincident with the federal transportation funding reauthorization. It will signal the beginning of the deployment process in the auto industry and public agencies.
MARK IV Transportation Technologies supplies the electronic toll collection equipment throughout the Northeastern United States. With more than 24 million toll transponders shipped and more than 3,000 lanes equipped, MARK IV is the largest supplier of its kind in North America. Known for its innovations, MARK IV technology has enabled many landmark intelligent transportation system deployments, including: Highway 407 Express Toll Route, the world's first, non-stop, all-electronic toll road; interoperability between truck electronic screening preclearance systems and toll collection; numerous border crossing projects; and, the E-ZPass(SM) system of the Interagency Group of 21 toll authorities.
