Freescale and Southern University-Baton Rouge Team up on Senior Electronic Engineering Design Projects; Donations Allow Students to Conduct 'Real Life' Digital Electronics Laboratory Experiments

AUSTIN, Texas & BATON ROUGE, La.--Nov. 7, 2005--Freescale Semiconductor has adopted a laboratory within the department of electrical engineering at Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR) for conducting digital electronics and microprocessor related projects. Freescale is sponsoring a senior design team that is working with the MC9S12NE64, which is Freescale's first series of 16-bit microcontrollers with embedded Ethernet connectivity.

"This laboratory will utilize modern semiconductor system development tools and bread boards to undertake innovative senior design projects and will enable electrical engineering students to design embedded systems and controllers," said Dr. Habib Mohamadian, dean, SUBR College of Engineering.

"The electrical engineering department's faculty plans to offer new courses in conjunction with the newly modeled laboratory and expects to verify and design circuits using embedded controllers," said Dr. Pradeep Bhattacharya, electrical engineering department chair, SUBR. "We are hoping to collaborate with Freescale as an ongoing partnership."

Freescale plans to provide support via hardware and software to help SUBR with the sequencing of digital electronics and microprocessor lecture courses and the related instructional laboratories. As this program progresses, Freescale and Southern University expect to be able to share their new hardware and software developments with other departments throughout the University.
