Fleetguard Emission Solutions Opens Manufacturing Facility in South Africa

PRETORIA, South Africa--Nov. 3, 2005--Fleetguard Emission Solutions today announced that it has opened an exhaust aftertreatment manufacturing facility here to produce Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) systems that reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions by 70 to 80 percent in heavy-duty truck and specialty vehicle applications.

Fleetguard Emission Solutions is a part of the Components Segment of Cummins Inc. , the world's largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines and related power products. Cummins Inc. is headquartered in Columbus, Ind.

The high-volume plant is the first of its kind in South Africa and the products made will help heavy-duty trucks meet the Euro IV and Euro V emission standards, which take effect in 2006. Initially, all SCR systems made at the plant will be exported to serve the European market.

Fleetguard Emission Solutions has invested more than $3 million in the 50,000-square-foot facility located in Pretoria's Rossyln Automotive Supplier Park, which is near key suppliers and transportation facilities. The plant is expected to employ about 50 workers by mid-2006.

A small number of the SCR systems will be produced this year with full production levels projected to begin in the second quarter of 2006. Production at the plant eventually is expected to exceed 70,000 units a year.

"Emission Solutions is delighted to have earned its position as a market-leading supplier of Euro IV capable exhaust systems," said Mike Cross, Vice President - Emission Solutions. "This is a world-class facility that allows us to offer the market a unique value proposition in terms of providing leading technology at an extremely competitive cost."

SCR works by introducing aqueous urea (known as AdBlue in Europe) into the exhaust system. The urea, an organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen, reacts with a catalyst in the exhaust system to break down NOx into nitrogen and water, significantly reducing NOx emissions.

The Pretoria plant will serve as a complement to a lower-volume SCR facility in Hinckley, United Kingdom, where about 20,000 units are produced each year. Today's opening ceremony was attended by a number of Cummins officials, including Cross and Rick Mills, Cummins Vice President and President - Components Group, along with key customers, suppliers and government officials.

"The opening of this facility is the culmination of a collaborative effort between Fleetguard Emission Solutions and its key stakeholders: customers, suppliers, the South African government and other local businesses - all of whom have provided considerable support," said Dan Davis, Executive Director OEM Business - Fleetguard Emission Solutions. "We are excited about the prospects for this plant and the future of our products, which are helping produce cleaner diesel engines around the world."
