Delphi Launches Family of High-Power Connection Systems at SAE CV Congress
'Power Pack' Series Meets Needs of Commercial Vehicle, Hybrid Markets
CHICAGO, Nov. 1 -- Delphi Corp. is forging a more prominent role in meeting the unique connectivity needs of vehicle manufacturer's high- power applications with the arrival of its Power Pack Connection Systems series to the market.

Delphi Connection Systems, a business segment within Delphi Corp., is introducing the high-power interconnect technology at Delphi's booth (No. 121) at the 2005 SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress and Exhibition in Chicago, a venue that properly showcases the new product family.
"The special needs of the commercial vehicle market require advanced connection systems technology capable of meeting a diverse list of design criteria," said Don Bizon, Delphi Connection Systems product manager. "The Power Pack series hits these targets and more with a highly reliable, cost- effective product that's well tailored for commercial vehicle customers."
Design criteria met with the Power Pack Connection Systems family primarily address rigorous power requirements and robust performance in extreme in-vehicle environments. Its high-voltage, high-current capability combined with its sealed-system configuration also makes the Power Pack a strong candidate for automakers' hybrid vehicle programs.
Capable of carrying up to 200 amps, the Power Pack series features a silver-plated terminal design that allows the connection system to withstand temperatures of up to 155 degrees C. It also provides ease-of-assembly benefits, with its hand engage/disengage capability and its indexed configuration, which is designed to prevent plugging misalignment upon installation.
Delphi Connection Systems is launching first its one-way sealed in-line system, and is in the final stages of developing two- and three-way systems in the Power Pack family for future availability. These sealed in-line systems will feature a connector-locking collar for even greater support. One- and two-way right-angle connection systems will also be found in the Power Pack portfolio.
Typical applications for the Power Pack connections include in-line applications and direct mating to high-power, on-board devices and modules. Specifically, battery cable, electrical center, alternator/starter motor and front-wall pass through applications are candidates for Power Pack products, the latter a significant consideration in the commercial vehicle market, Bizon said.
Overall, Delphi Connection Systems continues to set performance standards for automotive and commercial vehicle connectors. With more than 100 years experience in the transportation industry, Delphi's track record of innovations in connection systems technology include: establishing the industry standard for sealing technology with multi ribbed silicone seals; first use of plastic fiber optics in the vehicle; first use of beamed infra- red optics (for steering wheel mounted controls); introduction of sealed IDC (insulation displacement connections) into vehicle wiring; and first introduction of gel sealed connections.
Delphi now has more than 200,000 connection systems parts in its automotive and commercial vehicle portfolio, with products ranging from small electronic to high-powered connection systems, including custom designs.
