Windham and Payne early leaders at The Strip 


LAS VEGAS -  After a hiatus of a little less than a week, NHRA racing
action returned today to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the
track hosts the Short Line Express Market Las Vegas Gamblers Shootout, a
round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, today through Sunday. The
event, which closes out the seven race Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
schedule within NHRA's Pacific division, is also the final event of the
nationwide 47 race divisional series. The event additionally serves as
one of the final opportunities for racing competitors to earn valuable
points towards divisional and national championships.

In all, competitors in eight Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series roared down
The Strip today for time trials and qualifying, with the racers in Top
Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock,
hoping to earn the top qualifying honors in their individual
eliminators. 

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Joe Windham of Fairfield, Calif., is the early
qualifying leader in the class with an impressive 5.373 second pass at
259.41 mph. Earning the second spot is Sandy, Utah's Aaron Olivarez,
while Scotia, Calif., racer Hillary Will sits third. Qualified closely
behind Will in the No. 4 spot is the Short Line Express Market dragster
of Boulder City's, Duane Shields. Among those currently not qualified
are Las Vegas racers Frank Dischbein and Darby Neagle.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, a pair of strong Southern California runners,
Jay Payne of Claremont and Steve Gasparrelli of West Covina laid down a
pair of 5.68-second passes to claim the No. 1 and 2 spots in the field.
Payne ran 5.682-seconds at 253.85 to claim the top spot, while
Gasparrelli covered the quarter-mile in 5.687-seconds at 255.24 mph to
claim second. Defending Pacific Division Champion, Doug Gordon of Paso
Robles, Calif., is fifth, while Las Vegas runner, Paul Crifasi currently
sits outside of the eight-car field in the No. 15 spot.   

Other qualifying leaders after today's opening rounds were, Bo Butner
III of Floyds Knobs, Ind., in Comp Eliminator, Harry Holton of Modesto
Calif., in Super Stock and Jerry Bennett of Hickory, Ky., in Stock
Eliminator. 

Saturday's racing action at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will
feature the continuation of qualifying and time trials in all categories
beginning at 7 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are
scheduled to have their final qualifying attempts at noon and 4 p.m.

Spectator gates open each day at 7 a.m. General Admission tickets each
day are $25 for Adults and $5 for children 6-12 years old. Children
under 5 are admitted free. Senior citizens, Military and students are
all eligible for $15 admission each day with proper I.D.
