3D Systems Congratulates the Renault F1 Team on Becoming Double World Champions; Renault F1 Team Wins the 2005 Constructors' Championship and Fernando Alonso Becomes Youngest Driver to Win FIA Formula One World Championship
VALENCIA, Calif.--Oct. 2, 20054, 2005--3D Systems Corporation , a leading provider of rapid 3-D printing, prototyping and manufacturing solutions, congratulates the Renault F1 Team on becoming double World Champions, an historic first for the French company."This has truly been a remarkable season for the Renault F1 Team, one of the leading users of our rapid manufacturing solutions, culminating with their achievement of double World Championships," said Abe Reichental, 3D Systems' president and chief executive officer. "At the Chinese Grand Prix, on Sunday 16 October, Fernando Alonso took his seventh win of the season and Giancarlo Fisichella finished fourth, securing the 2005 Constructors' Championship for the team. The Constructors' Championship came just weeks after Fernando Alonso became the youngest F1 driver to win the FIA Formula One World Championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
"Throughout our partnership with Renault F1 Team, we have seen it evolve into a powerhouse," continued Reichental. "The success that the Renault F1 Team has enjoyed is due to its dedicated team work, its determination to win and the support it received from 3D Systems and other partners. A key competitive advantage for the Renault F1 Team was the aero efficiency of its car, and this could not have been done without the strength and depth of the Renault F1 Team's ADM Centre in Enstone, England, a facility that is 100% dedicated to 3D Systems' technology."
"Formula One is the ultimate team sport," said Bob Bell, Technical Director for Renault F1 Team. "To be successful you need the best drivers and then provide them with the best cars and support. It is an inseparable mix of human endeavor and technical sophistication.
"Vital to this mix is the role of aerodynamics, as it is the most efficient means of adding performance to a car. At the Renault F1 Team, the Advanced Digital Manufacturing Technology available to us through 3D Systems always ensures we are at the forefront of productivity in wind tunnel testing, which, in the modern era of Formula One, directly relates to improved track performance," concluded Bell.
"3D Systems' contribution to important areas of car development has been crucial for the Renault F1 Team," continued Reichental. "In preparation for the 2005 season, the Renault F1 Team devoted thousands of hours to the design, development and manufacturing of the R25. In order to achieve an aggressive testing and production schedule, the Renault F1 Team used our rapid direct manufacturing systems to produce models, prototypes and parts for use on their cars. The Renault F1 Team's ADM Centre is equipped with a comprehensive portfolio of our systems solutions, including 5 SLA(R) 7000 systems, 2 Vanguard SLS(R) systems and one of the very first Sinterstation(R) Pro SLS(R) systems. By utilizing these systems, the Renault F1 Team produced over 14,000 stereolithography parts for wind tunnel testing, and ran with nearly 22 parts manufactured from our systems installed on the R25 during each race this year," concluded Reichental.
"Regulations in Formula 1 are very strict and the areas we can investigate to gain a competitive advantage over our adversaries are limited," said John Mardle, Renault F1 Teams Operation Director. "We have been working with 3D Systems for many years now, and this relationship has been crucial in allowing us to maximize the power of our wind tunnel. The capability provided by 3D Systems' rapid manufacturing solutions has enabled us to produce more than 14,000 components and test them over one season. In addition to this, 3D Systems technologies are now giving us more flexibility and huge time savings in the production of some car parts, and this aspect is developing all the time."
