PTC Solutions Drive Mitsubishi Motor Sports To World Rally Championship Success; Mitsubishi Motor Sports Achieves 30% Reduction in Development Time for World Rally Cars with Pro/ENGINEER(R)

NEEDHAM, Mass.--Oct. 1, 20058, 2005--PTC , the Product Development Company(TM), today announced that Mitsubishi Motor Sports (MMSP), a key player in FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), has achieved significant benefits by standardizing on PTC's Pro/ENGINEER) and Pro/INTRALINK(R) solutions for the complete development of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution World Rally Championship car. PTC solutions allow engineers at MMSP to work collaboratively on continuous design improvements throughout the highly iterative and complex product development process. This has helped MMSP reduce development time for its rally cars by 30% and improve overall design accuracy.

MMSP has been using PTC solutions since 2001. In 2004, Mitsubishi Motor Sports began a three-year initiative to regain a top position in the WRC. An integral part of the initiative was the expansion of and standardization on PTC's product design and development solutions throughout MMSP. Throughout the ongoing product development process, the 12-man MMSP development team uses Pro/ENGINEER for:

-- The development and modification of the complete surface design and car components

-- Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tasks such as structural and thermal simulation and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of every highly stressed component and safety-critical part, such as the roll cage, suspension links, transmission parts and wheel rims

-- Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) tasks for the complete machining process

The associative CAD/CAM/CAE capabilities of Pro/ENGINEER help MMSP improve time-to-market, product quality and manufacturing consistency because all design changes made in Pro/ENGINEER are updated automatically in the analyses and manufacturing tool paths.

"Our main challenge is to push the limits of performance without compromising reliability," says Paul Doe, Chief Designer at Mitsubishi Motor Sports. "Pro/ENGINEER is a comprehensive solution that not only facilitates all of our product development processes, but also has a very easy-to-use, intuitive user interface. This combination allows us to perform powerful and complex tasks quickly and easily, fuelling productivity improvements."

Overall the development of rally championship motor sport cars is a very intense process. With an 11-month racing season, 16 rallies plus 15 test sessions, there is no real 'off season.' The MMSP design team is busy all year-round and development planning is particularly complex. For example, the number of different vehicle configurations to suit various driving conditions adds complexity to the process. Cost is also a factor, so targeting the most efficient ways to improve performance is an important consideration. With Pro/ENGINEER Behavioral Modeling(R) capability, MMSP engineering analysts are able to predict the likely performance gain for any particular project, and we can compare this against the likely cost.

Moving forward, MMSP will complement its Pro/ENGINEER use with the implementation of PTC Windchill(R) for data management and collaboration. Since MMSP modifies and builds new car components for each rally and testing, it is necessary to manage significant amounts of data that changes regularly, manage complex and time-sensitive processes and coordinate the efforts of a team of engineers to optimise the cars for subsequent races. The integral and flexible architecture of Windchill will help MMSP maximize productivity through strengthened collaborative processes, and reduce its development costs and the overall development time for new cars.

"We are very proud to support Mitsubishi Motor Sports' need for a 3D design and modeling solution that is fast, accurate, easy-to-use and most importantly, has the power to handle anything they throw at it over the course of their extremely intense racing season," says Paul Haimes, PTC Senior Technical Director, Nothern Europe.

About Mitsubishi Motor Sports (MMSP)

Mitsubishi Motors Motor Sports (MMSP) is the works motor sports arm of the parent company Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC). First competing in world motor sport back in the 1962 Macau Grand Prix, the Japanese manufacturer has focused its activities on rally and cross-country competition and has been dominant in both. Mitsubishi Motors has won four world Drivers' titles with Tommi Makinen (1996-1999) in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and claimed the world Manufacturers' title in 1998 in the FIA World Rally Championship. Mitsubishi remains one of the most successful manufacturers in Cross Country Rallies and in the history of the Dakar Rally, achieving its tenth victory and fifth consecutive win in 2005.
