Chemical Management Services Workshop Showcases Innovative Supply Chain Partnerships
Electronics, Utilities, Aerospace, and Auto Companies Cut Chemical Use and Reduce Costs Using CMS
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 -- Representatives from Seagate Technology, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Pacific Gas & Electric, United Technologies Corp., General Motors, Raytheon Company, FirstEnergy, and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center will share their experiences in implementing a new strategic supply chain approach to chemical use at a workshop on October 20th in San Francisco, California. Chemical Management Services (CMS) is an emerging supply chain model that reduces both the total cost of chemical ownership and the environmental impacts of chemical use. CMS moves purchasing away from the traditional supply model to an integrated services approach. The nonprofit Chemical Strategies Partnership (CSP) and its membership group, the CMS Forum, are hosting the workshop to share best practices in CMS.
CMS involves a strategic partnership with a chemical service provider who performs some or all of the chemical management for a facility. "Manufacturers who are interested in moving towards a strategic supply chain approach can learn first hand how other companies have successfully implemented CMS programs," says Jill Kauffman Johnson, Executive Director of Chemical Strategies Partnership. "Companies in more than eleven sectors are adopting CMS and seeing increased logistics efficiency while reducing input costs. One semiconductor facility cut its chemical consumption by 50 percent, and significantly reduced its hazardous waste with its CMS program."
CSP's 9th Annual CMS Workshop, The Expansion and Evolution of the CMS Model, includes in-depth case studies from a variety of industries, including electronics, aerospace, airline, utilities, and automotive. Ken Storer, Senior Director at Seagate Technology, will open the day describing their shift to chemical management services and the significant economic and environmental benefits they have realized.
Other sessions will explore topics including involving minority-owned businesses in the supply base, how to get started on a CMS program, innovation in CMS contracts, establishing performance metrics, information systems, and CMS in research and school settings.
