NEWMAN CLAIMS FIFTH BUSCH WIN OF SEASON
Moorpark, Calif. - (October 17, 2005) Ryan Newman, protected with UnderX
by Ringers, took his No. 39 Alltel Dodge to victory lane Friday night for his
fifth straight win in NASCAR Busch Series action.
It was only Newman’s sixth start in Busch Series competition this year,
making him the first driver to win five consecutive races in only six starts.
Newman led five different times for a total of 133 laps over the course of
the Dollar General 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Paul Menard, also protected with UnderX by Ringers, didn’t have enough to
catch Newman during the long and tedious event, but endured the obstacles the
track put forth throughout the night and brought home a third place finish.
Newman’s next Busch appearance will be at Texas Motor Speedway, while Menard’
s, a Busch Series regular, is this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park.
On Saturday night, Newman and his Penske Racing South teammates all hoped to
tame the newly levigated track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that plagued many in
the Busch Series race on Friday night.
After starting on the outside front row, Newman suffered a cut tire early on
in the race, had a gas can stuck in his car after a routine pit stop and
battled a tight car during the race, but he also led during the night hoping to
claim his second Nextel Cup win of the year, but was pleased to finish
seventh.
His teammate Travis Kvapil and his No. 77 Kodak/Jasper Engines Dodge was the
highest finishing Raybestos Rookie of the Race in 17th.
Their teammate Rusty Wallace spun in the closing laps of the race while
trying to pass a car on the lower groove. Wallace barely tagged the wall and
mustered a 24th place finish in his Miller Lite Dodge.
Newman drops to fourth in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series (NNCS) Chase for the
Championship points, but only 17 points behind leader Tony Stewart, while Wallace
dropped three slots, 92 points out from first.
With only five races remaining in the Chase, the NNCS heads to Martinsville
Speedway, along with the Craftsman Truck Series, this weekend for the Subway
500.
