TORRENCE CONTINUES HOT TAD STREAK, GASPARRELLI LEADS IN TAFC

            ENNIS, Texas - In the first rounds of qualifying at the Texas
Motorplex, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Steve Torrence and Top Alcohol Funny
Car pilot Steve Gasparrelli took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their
classes. 

Torrence, a 22-year-old rookie Top Alcohol Dragster driver from Kilgore,
Texas, set the pace with a 5.332-second, 264.80 mph pass.  Torrence has been
on a tear since he was runner-up at his first race in May.  Since then he
has won the last three NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil events as well
as four NHRA national events.  He has already clinched both the national and
divisional championships in Top Alcohol Dragster.

Gasparrelli is a former Pacific Division Top Alcohol Funny Car champ and
currently has an outside shot at the national title this year.  The West
Covina, Calif., racer ran 5.679 seconds at 257.14 mph to lead the field.
The second place qualifier, Richard McClain of Lake Dallas, Texas, ran 5.838
seconds at 249.30 mph. 

Top qualifiers in other classes are Houston's Colt Mikel in Comp Eliminator
and Super Stock competitor Bob Dennis of Shorter, Ala.  In Stock Eliminator,
Kennedale, Texas' Jerry Hefler is on top and in Top Sportsman Bert Prejean
of St. Amant, La., set the pace.  Freemont, Neb., resident Tom Gilligan
leads the Sportsman Motorcycle field and Larry Eidson, Mineral Wells, Texas,
is the No. 1 qualifier in Top Dragster.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at the Texas Motorplex.
Gates open at 8 a.m. both days.  Qualifying and time trails continue
Saturday at 9 a.m. and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will
qualify at 1 and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday at noon and Top Alcohol
Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.

Tickets are $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 6 to 15 years old are $10
each day.  A two-day tick is $40 for adults and $20 for kids.  Children 5
and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
