AT SPEEDWORLD RACEWAY PARK SUMMIT SERIES FINALS
NORTHWEST PHOENIX, Ariz... - The home team from Speedworld
Raceway Park took An overwhelming victory at the Pacific Division Summit
Racing Series Finals Sunday. They amassed a total of 88 points
(representing round wins), while the defending champions from Famoso
Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., finished second with 65 points. In
fact, the event was dominated by Arizona racers. Right behind Famoso's
team were Southwestern Int'l Raceway in Tucson (63) and Firebird Int'l
Raceway in Phoenix (62). Rounding out the Top Five was Infineon Raceway
in Sonoma, Calif., (61).
Individual titles also nearly fell totally to Arizona
racers as wins went to Chris Lindsey, of Peoria, Ariz., in Pro; Mark
Simonian, of Sanger, Calif., in Sportsman, Ray Baumgardner, of Phoenix,
in Street, and Ken Van Buren, of New River, Ariz., in Motorcycle.
The winners now qualify to compete at the NHRA Summit Racing
Series National Finals in November during the NHRA Automobile Club of
Southern California Finals at Pomona Raceway. In Pomona the Pacific
Division champs will join champions from NHRA six other geographic
regions to compete for national championships.
Young Peter Conogai, of Tucson, won the High School title.
In Saturday's Race of Champions, Jay Nakamura in Pro, Ryan
Smith in Sportsman, Doug Gibson in Street and Joseph Smith in
Motorcycle/Snowmobile. Also, Clayton Nickels, a student from Livermore,
Calif., took the trophy for winning the High School Race of Champions.
The Race of Champions is a competition amongst the top few racers from
each category.
