Fuller forces his way into a top 10 ranking
DALLAS 10/9/05 He may be a part-time racer this season but Top Fuel professional "Hot Rod" Fuller is posting full-time numbers, roaring into the prestigious POWERade Top 10 this weekend with a strong semifinal finish at the 20th anniversary O'Reilly Fall Nationals.
Fuller started strong, using a career-best pass of 4.493 seconds at 328.94 mph in qualifying his special-edition 84 Lumber/David Powers Homes dragster in the fourth position on the elimination ladder at the Texas Motorplex. He then beat veterans Dave Grubnic and John Smith on race day before falling to Doug Herbert in the semifinals.
By racing through to the third of four elimination rounds, Fuller moved into 10th place by 16 points. It's a remarkable feat for a team that has competed in just 13 of 21 races so far this season.
"We're going full-time next year and we hope to be a contender,?? said Fuller. I think we're showing what we're capable of but I have to admit that I'm still learning a lot. I've been racing for years but a Top Fuel dragster, especially one as quick as this one, is a real handful and I'm certainly soaking up the experience."
Team owner David Powers, who builds custom homes in the Greater Houston area, was ecstatic with such a strong showing in his home state of Texas.
"I feel like we did everything we set out to do this weekend short of winning the event," said Powers, a former Funny Car racer. "We ran our first 4.4-second pass, we got into the top 10, and we went rounds on Sunday. It's exciting and satisfying to see this team perform at this level and knowing that we have everybody locked up for next year has us thrilled about the future.
"I'm also very impressed with Rod and the way he's been driving. He's cutting great lights and doing a superb job of getting the car down the racetrack. We've got two races left this year and we're going to do everything we can to continue this great run we're having. Winning another race would be a nice finish."
