Yokohama With Most Maximum Traction Tires

FULLERTON, Calif., Sept. 28 -- In information released earlier this month, Yokohama Tire Corporation has the most tire lines with maximum tread rating ("AA") as identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA's 2005 ratings cover more than 2,400 lines of the most popular passenger vehicle tires sold in the U.S. The agency rates tires based on traction, treadwear and their ability to resist heat. For some consumers, stopping distances on a wet road can be important. Traction ratings are expressed in letter grades from "AA" -- the highest -- to "C" -- the lowest. Tires with a higher grade allow a vehicle to stop in a shorter distance on a wet road. This year, nearly 90 tire lines received the highest possible rating for traction. Yokohama led the way with 10 tire lines with the "AA" traction rating.

"Higher quality tires, along with good maintenance, provide consumers a greater margin of safety. The tire grading system is a big help in the often-confusing process of selecting tires," said NHTSA Administrator Jeffrey W. Runge, M.D.

"Yokohama is a strong advocate of helping our nation's streets and highways become a safer place," said Art Michalik, director of marketing communications for Yokohama. "We're honored to stand behind the quality product we produce."

Yokohama Tire Corporation manufactures, markets and distributes a complete line of products for high performance, light truck, passenger car, commercial truck and bus, as well as off-the-road mining and construction applications. Yokohama supports the tire care and safety guidelines established by the Rubber Manufacturer Association (RMA) and the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
