CALIFORNIA DIRT FOCUS CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DECIDED SATURDAY;
MEIER LEADS PAVEMENT DRIVERS AT ORANGE SHOW
INDIANAPOLIS – One of the season’s most torrid USAC battles will come to a
close this weekend at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway.
Californians Chase Barber of Morgan Hill and Alex Harris of Simi Valley will
end their season-long battle for supremacy in the California Ford Focus Dirt
Midget Car Series. Separated by only 37 points, Barber looks for his first
USAC title while Harris hopes to add the championship to a pair of TQ crowns
he snatched during the mid-1990s. Together, the pair has accounted for seven
wins on the circuit.
The Dirt finale comes a week after Harris and Barber fought in another title
battle – the California Ford Focus Pavement division – at Orange Show
Speedway in San Bernardino, Calif. But Jace Meier of Las Vegas made sure
they did their fighting a little further back in the field. Meier passed
Cameron Veach on Lap 38 of the 40-lap contest and led the final three laps
for his career USAC Ford Focus victory.
Veach was second, followed by Barber, Harris and fast qualifier Jeff
Sakowicz. Harris leads Audra Sasselli, who finished seventh, by 12 points
and Barber by 15 heading into the next Pavement race Oct. 15 at Irwindale
Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.
