West Lebanon, NY: Lebanon Valley Speedway wrote its final chapter of its
53rd season this past Saturday, with plenty to of action to keep fans and
teams talking for the long winter months to come. DMC Racing Products
presenting the final night's program with a full card of events that
included a Sportsman 30 lap Classic, the Pro Stock/Rookie Challenge, as well
as 4 cylinder feature.
Under heavy cloud cover for most of the day, the Valley of Speed was fast,
and tricky. But it didn't take long for the winningest Sportsman driver at
the Valley to figure it out! As the full moon off the west banking
spotlighted the Sportsman division. As the field went under green, it was
evident that the night wasn't going to go easy. With 4 cautions by lap 6
six, it was clear that the 30 lap feature was going to be raced in segments.
But by lap 11, Collins made his way through the field from his 7th
starting spot, and was now comfortably on the front row.
With the ensuing restart, Collins, but the field behind, and ran away with
the show. Hot on his rear bumper was Lorne Browe's #14, and the hard
charging K.C. Goewey. Goewey was running in the top 5 earlier in the event,
but contact with another car had shuffled him back to nearly the rear of the
field on lap 8. But by the time the last caution flew on lap 27, he was
back into the top 5, and coming hard.
But it wasn't going to be enough for Browe or Goewey, as Collins put it on
cruise control and sailed away, winning the $1,000.00 DMC Racing Products
Sportsman Classic. 2nd was Browe, followed by Goewey, Jeff Watson was 4th,
and Frankie Harper's #25 capped off the top 5. Other Notables; Donnie
Ackner aboard the #78 salvaged a 6th place run after being involved in
several incidence early in the feature, the #95 of Carmon Carnibucci power
his Toyota sponsored ride back to 7th after a late race spin, as well as the
#9H of Ed Harkins whom also spun, and came back to finished 9th.
Also on tap were the Pro Stocks and rookies, as they capped off their season
with a shootout of their own. The 20 lap feature was packed with the "full
moon fever" that was running rampant throughout much of the night. By the
conclusion of lap 1, there had already been 3 cautions, involving 8 cars.
Out of the race early, before lap 2, was Jimmy Langenback's 54L, Jason
Casey's #324, Chris Claus' #80, the #48 of Mike Fachini, Kyle Hosier's #71 ,
and the #50 of Adam Lackey.
But up front, it was another story as Robbie Speed held down the top spot
for most of the 20 lap feature. But in the closing laps, tire wear became
an issue, and Speed began to slow, and that's all the rest of the field
needed. As the freight train went by, the top spot was held by Jay Casey's
#322, followed by the returning #55 of Adam Haas. In the closing laps, the
battle was on, but nothing could deny the Casey family a return to victory
lane. Casey crossed the line first, followed by Haas, 3rd was Mike
Middleton, 4th was Robbie Speed, and 5th was the 1st Rookie car of John
Rivers Jr. in his #14R.
Following Rivers was the #3 of Bill Hammell, 7th was Brian Keough's #311,
8th was Rob Maxon's #17, followed by Hugh Page aboard his #143, and the #118
of Jeff Kelmel rounded out the final top 10 of the season.
The Pure Stock division also put on a show as their season came to a close.
To celebrate, a 5th feature was added to the normal four as a "Top 5
Shootout", with the top 5 finishers from each getting a chance at the 15 lap
feature. The regular show saw Pure Stock#1 captured by 1st time winner
Gerald Simpson in his #36. Pure Stock#2 saw Brian Houghtaling's #28 squeak
out David Bink for the win. Jon Routhier captured Pure Stock #3, and Nick
Hilt finished first in Pure Stock #4. That set the field for the Pure Stock
Feature.
In the feature, it was good, hard racing. Lap after lap the field diced it
out. And what looked like a runaway by the #015 of Jon Routhier, soon
changed as the cautions played to the favor of the rest of the field. With
just 3 laps remaining in the event, the #99 of Pete DeFiglio charged into
the lead after a short caution, he was under pressure. The #015 was sitting
2nd with the #04 of Tom Harkins hovering in 3rd. Behind him was a fast
closing #78 of Pete Wiegand who was involved in an earlier incident that
dropped him to the back of the field. But it was not going to be enough for
anyone, as the American Heart Assoc.
#99 of Peter DeFiglio captured the extra distance race and bragging rights
for the winter months ahead. 2nd was Jon Routhier, followed by Tom Harkins,
Pete Wiegand charged into 4th, and Bob Palmer rounded out the top 5. Jesse
Murphy was 6th, 7th was Dave Streibel, 8th was Brian Houghtaling, followed
by Jay LaMountain, and Tom Murphy rounding out the Pure Stock final top 10.
The 4 cylinder feature was captured by the #28 of Phil DeFiglio, Tim Sayers
finished 2nd, and Chris Delfino had a podium finish, crossing the line in
3rd.
