BRISCOE RECEIVES FOURTH SPRINT CAR
CHAMPIONSHIP
STANBROUGH, LEX, & CAWOOD
NOTCH FEATURE WINS ON THE RED CLAY
BLOOMINGTON, IN (SEPTEMBER 17, 2005) - After being dark for two weeks, everyone was more than ready to race again - Bloomington Speedway staff, racers, and fans. In spite of threatening weather 109 cars were on hand to compete against each other and the red clay.
The first order of business was for the top ten sprint car drivers to come across the track and greet their fans and sign autographs. Our drivers understand that it is their fans who make it possible for them to race. They buy the tickets that help to pay their purse; and they buy the products sold by their sponsors. That makes it possible for the sponsor to write that check next year and maybe make it just a little bigger. When the greeting and signing was done, they received their plaques, points money, and contingency awards. They were:
1. Kevin Briscoe: Kevin wrapped up his fourth Bloomington Speedway sprint car championship. Kevin is the second sprint car racer to achieve this. This feat was first accomplished by Derek Scheffel a couple of years ago; but that does no diminish the scope of Briscoe's accomplishment. In route to this year's championship, Briscoe had two feature wins and six top five finishes out of twelve shows.
2. Kenny Carmichael, Sr.: Kenny scored four top five finishes and missed the feature only once. In addition to that he and his son both finished in the top ten in the points. Each year Kenny finishes near the top of the points standings. Kenny just missed the championship this season. Perhaps the 2006 season will bring him his Bloomington Speedway championship.
3. (Tie) Brady Short: Last season Brady Short was the O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept. modified champion. At the HARF awards banquet he announced that he was switching to sprint cars in 2005. It was anticipated that he would show up with good equipment; but it is unlikely that anyone would have predicted a third place finish for him this season. In addition, Brady was named the Jeff Gordon Rookie of the Year. He scored a feature win and one other top five finish. He'll almost certainly be in line for the championship next season.
3. (Tie) Bobby Stines: Bobby had three top five finishes in addition to some fast times. He is a good solid racer; and it should come as no surprise when he wins his first Bloomington Speedway championship.
e.. Mitch Cunningham: Mitch Cunningham ran with us every week; and he missed the feature only three times. In addition to an excellent position in the points, Mitch was named the most improved sprint car racer.
f.. Steve Rone: Steve Rone was the 2004 most improved driver at Bloomington Speedway. And, his improvement continued to improve this season. Steve missed only one show; and failed to miss one other feature. However, Steve's time wasn't all wrapped up in racing. He also graduated with honors from Indiana State University.
g.. Kevin Besecker: Kevin finished in the top ten in points for the first time this season. He was a good, solid performer every week; and he had six top ten finishes.
h.. Kenny Carmichael, Jr.: Kenny Carmichael, Jr. joined his father in the top ten in points for the first time this season. He was in competition every week; and he had three top ten finishes.
i.. Jon Sciscoe: Jon turned in a strong season; however, a couple of bad crashes ran him short of both equipment and body. In spite of missing two shows, he wound up ninth in points and had three top ten finishes.
j.. (Tie): Brent Beauchamp: Although he is only fourteen years old, he is already a very accomplished race driver. He has been racing midgets for some time. This was his rookie season in sprint cars; and normally a tenth place finish in the points would make him rookie of the year. Although he missed that honor, he still had an exceptional first season with three top ten finishes.
10. (Tie): Kent Christian: Kent almost always runs strong at Bloomington Speedway. This season he had a feature win and four top ten finishes. With a little luck Kent is a good candidate for a Bloomington Speedway championship.
DARLAND LOSES HEARTBREAKER BY INCHES
Dave Darland was the fifth fastest qualifier last night. If he transferred to the feature along with the four faster qualifiers, he would be in the catbird's seat for the start of the feature. He finished third to earn his ticket to the feature event. However, Kevin Briscoe was on the pole in the Fox Construction sprinter. Tony Fox had tried his hand at driving again the last time we raced; and he decided to put a driver in the cockpit with more recent experience. Nobody doubted the wisdom of his decision.
When the green flag waved, Darland charged into the lead. However, before they got around the south end of the track, Bryan Clauson spun the Bullet house car; and had to go to the tail. Dave would have to battle a restart, but a very strong challenger would be starting on the tail. Not a bad trade.
When the race restarted, Darland again took the point with Jon Stanbrough, Briscoe, Mat Neely, and Kenny Carmichael in tow. Dick Gaines II started tenth; and, by the time the tenth lap went in the books, he was running fifth.
By the end of the 20th circuit, the first four remained unchanged; but A.J. Anderson, who had started eighth, had moved up to fifth. Gaines had fallen back to sixth; and the other Keith Kunz Motorsports entry, driven by Darren Hagen, had moved up to seventh.
As Darland came out of the fourth turn, his right rear tire exploded. He stayed on the throttle and careened across the finish line. Unfortunately for Darland, the demise of his right rear slowed him just enough for Jon Stanbrough to pull the Truckers sprinter alongside as they neared the finish line. In one of the closest finishes ever at Bloomington Speedway, Darland had lost by about two inches. His car left the track and very nearly bought a piece of the fence. Dave climbed out of the disable machine and walked back to victory lane only to find Stanbrough and his car waiting there. It was a bitter pill for Darland and his team to swallow; but that's racing. Hopefully, when he has time to think about it, he will be able to call to mind some races that he's won the same way.
Mat Neely finished third trailed by A.J. Anderson, Briscoe, Gaines, Hagen, Bill Rose in the second Truckers car, Tom Hessert III, and Danny Holtsclaw.
In preliminary action, Neely had quick time. Briscoe, Hagen, Mitch Cunningham, Stanbrough, and Kenny Carmichael, Sr. won the heat races while Neely and Brady Short won the two B features.
LEX SCORES MODIFIED FEATURE WIN
Morgantown's Richie Lex has been a very tough competitor through the years; but this was only his fourth race of the season on the red clay. He finished third behind Gary Barrow and John DeMoss to earn his ticket to the feature.
When Rusty waved the green flag for the first time Shelby Miles charged into the lead from the pole position; however, Dan Hamstra, who also started on the front row, spun to bring out the yellow. Apparently the spin was the result of some mechanical failure as he pulled off of the track. He night was done. On the second start Miles took the point again trailed by Ray Humphrey, John DeMoss, and Jeff Bland, Jr. On the seventh circuit, John DeMoss slipped past Miles to take the lead; however, seven laps later, Miles took the lead again. However, Richie Lex had taken third; and he was coming.
On the 18th lap Lex passed DeMoss to take second. Lex continued to chase Lex until the 24th lap when Matt Boknecht passed John DeMoss to take third. As they came out of turn four to take the checkered flag, the first three were in a cluster. As they crossed the finish line, Lex held a lead of a few inches; and Matt Boknecht was second. Shelby Miles had slipped from first to third in a matter of feet.
John DeMoss came home fourth ahead of Ray Humphrey, Gary Barrow, Jesse Cramer, Jeff Bland, Jr., Ryan Thomas, and Jared Bailey.
Following the race, Matt Boknecht asked that the scorers recheck their records as he felt that Miles had beaten him. The audit of the scoring records reaffirmed the finish. Matt was second; and more than that, he was a true sportsman.
Leading up to the feature, Gary Barrow, Shelby Miles, Michael Sterrett, and Dan Hamstra won the heat races while Miles took the dash. Ralph Groomer prevailed in the "B" feature.
MIKE CAWOOD SCORES FIRST BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY WIN
Mike Cawood of Whiteland made his second trip of the season to Bloomington Speedway. On his first visit to the red Clay he had finished second. However, last night he found victory land for the first time a Bloomington Speedway.
At the green flag, Chris Hillman took the lead; however, his time on the point was brief indeed. On the third he left the track. His night was done. Mike Cawood then inherited the lead that he would hold until the checkered flags signaled the end of his battle. Randy Howe held second ahead of Chris Deweese. On the seventh circuit Deweese took over second place.
On lap 19 Ben DuBois inherited third when Tyler Cain was sidlined. It would remain that way until the race was done. Chris Deweese tried everything to get past Cawood; but he just couldn't close the deal.
Leading up to the feature, Deweese, Hillman, Cawood, and Jeremy Hines won the heat races while Deweese took the Dash. Kent Robinson rolled to a win in the "B" feature.
