GASPARRELLI, AUSTIN LEAD QUALIFIERS AT CALIFORNIA DRAGWAY'S LUCAS OIL DRAG
RACING SERIES EVENT

            FONTANA, Calif. - Racing continued today at California Dragway's
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.  Drivers in 10 classes are running
for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The race is
the sixth of seven on the NHRA Pacific Division schedule.

Steve Gasparrelli is the No. 1 qualifier in Top Alcohol Funny Car.  The San
Dimas, Calif., racer outran the field with a 5.907-second run at 248.20 mph.
The second place qualifier is the defending division champion in the class,
Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif., who ran 5.930 seconds at 242.32 mph. In
one of the best passes of the day, Gasparrelli and Gordon were virtually
neck and neck until just past the 1,000-foot mark.

Mike Austin of Medford, Ore., set the pace in Top Alcohol Dragster, running
5.537 seconds at 259.51 mph.  The No. 2 qualifier, Joseph Windham of
Fairfield, Calif., made a 5.746-second, 257.53 mph pass.

Ontario, Calif., resident John Mihovetz is the top qualifier in Comp
Eliminator. In Super Stock, Chuck Rayburn or Castro Valley, Calif., is in
the No. 1 spot while Upland, Calif., racer Frank Grossi is No. 2.  Tim Hall
of Fountain Valley, Calif., heads up Stock Eliminator qualifying and Joe
Roubicek of West Lake Village, Calif., leads in Top Comp.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at California Dragway.
Qualifying and time trials start at 

9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car have qualifying runs
at noon and 4 p.m.  Eliminations continue Sunday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol
Dragsters and Funny Cars will run first round at noon Sunday.

California Dragway is located on the grounds of California Speedway at 9300
Cherry Avenue in Fontana.  Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. 

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $20 each day.
Children 12 and under are admitted free.  A pit pass and parking are
