About The Scleroderma Foundation of the Delaware Valley. . .
The Scleroderma Foundation of the Delaware Valley Chapter (SFDV), founded in
1988, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that serves eastern Pennsylvania
as far west as Altoona, central and southern New Jersey and all of
Delaware. Our mission is three-pronged:
· to raise funds for research on the cause and treatment of
scleroderma
· to help patients and their families cope with the disease through
mutual support programs and hotline assistance
· to educate patients and their families as well as medical
professionals and the public, through meetings, literature, a newsletter, public
awareness programs and political advocacy
Unfortunately, as great strides are being made for the treatment and cure of
many diseases, scleroderma still remains relatively unknown to the general
public. As you may be aware, scleroderma, a devastating autoimmune disease
that hardens the skin and often attacks internal organs causing death, affects
over 300,000 U.S. citizens. Because it is a disease that receives so little
attention, it is important to consider these facts:
· 80% of scleroderma patients are women between the ages of 25 and
55, frequently during childbearing years, (5,000 to 7,000 children suffer with
either the linear or morphea form of pediatric scleroderma)
· external and internal forms of the disease can cause serious
facial changes, disfigurement and even death
· we do not yet know what causes scleroderma and currently there is
no cure
· annual direct and indirect costs of scleroderma in the United
States are $1.5 billion, according to a study abstract published in Seminars in
Arthritis and Rheumatism, and
· 50 million Americans suffer from an autoimmune disease
About The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. . .
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the leading charitable funder
and advocate of type 1 diabetes research worldwide. JDFR is driven by results
and successes in three major cure goals: restoring normal blood sugar,
preventing and reversing diabetes-related complications, and preventing diabetes.
Affects Young Children
Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on injected
or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating
complications. While diagnosis most often occurs in childhood and adolescence,
it can and does strike adults as well. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune
disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the
insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. While the causes of this process are not yet
entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental
triggers are involved.
Needs Constant Attention
To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must take multiple insulin
injections daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and test their blood
sugar by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times per day. While
trying to balance insulin doses with their food intake and daily activities,
people with this form of diabetes must always be prepared for serious
hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, both
of which can be life-limiting and life threatening. While insulin allows a
person to stay alive, it does not cure diabetes nor does it prevent its eventual
and devastating effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage,
amputations, heart attack and stroke.
Statistics and Warning Signs
· As many as 3 million Americans may have type 1 diabetes.â€
· Each year more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the
U.S. That’s 35 children every day.
· Warning signs of type 1 diabetes include: extreme thirst, frequent
urination, drowsiness or lethargy, increased appetite, sudden weight loss for no
reason, sudden vision changes, sugar in urine, fruity odor on breath, heavy or
labored breathing, stupor or unconsciousness. These may occur suddenly.
