Putz and Williams emerge as qualifying leaders
at Tri-State Raceway NHRA Lucas Series finale
EARLVILLE, Iowa - Earlvilles' own Richard Putz produced a 5.455, 259.06
mph qualifying run on Saturday afternoon to wrestle the Top Alcohol
Dragster pole away from Friday's leader David Wells, who was barely
nosed out at 5.456, 258.57 mph. Meanwhile, Kirk Williams, of Glenwood,
Iowa, nabbed the Top Alcohol Funny Car No. 1 qualifying position in his
'98 Pontiac Firebird at 5.805, 249.26 mph.
It's all part of the final 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event
in the West Central Division being presented this weekend at Tri-State
Raceway in Earlville by Hustler Turf Equipment and Wright-Way Trailers.
Putz, the defending event champion, and Wells head a field of eight Top
Alcohol Dragsters all qualified quicker than 5.794 seconds. Current
West Central Division points leader Randy Meyer, sits fourth on the
final qualifying list.
Williams is also closely followed in Top Alcohol Funny Car as
Californian Bernie Harrington sits No. 2 at 5.828 seconds at 249.26 mph.
Many-time division and former national champion Cy Chesterman, of Sioux
City, who leads the 2005 points standings, is third at 5.905.
Thomas Schmidt, of Lindstrom, Minn., in his C/Street Roadster, leads the
field in Competition eliminator, while Indiana racer Brian Olson is the
top driver in Super Stock and Robert Shaw, from Missouri, is the Stock
Eliminator leader.
Marengo, Iowa, rider Travis McMann is the top qualifier based on a
perfect reaction in the Sportsman Motorcycle field.
Final Eliminations for more than 400 racers b Sunday, at 8 a.m.
with the first rounds of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
scheduled for noon.
Tickets are $20 for adult general admission. Children 6 to 12 years old
are $5 and those 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
