CASCAR set to return to Cayuga 2000 Speedway this Saturday night for Race #11
LONDON, ON - This Saturday night, Cayuga 2000 Speedway will play host to
the 11th CASCAR Super Series race of the 2005 season. The event was
originally scheduled for mid-August, but was postponed by rain. The ‘Cayuga
2000 Speedway 200’ will take place under the lights at the 5/8-mile oval,
located south of Hamilton, ON in Nelles Corners.
Prior to the rained out date on August 14, Castrol Dodge driver DJ
Kennington was the hot driver on the CASCAR Super Series circuit. The St.
Thomas, ON racer was in search of his fourth consecutive feature checkered
flag. And although Kennington is still in third-place in the overall point
standings with a pair of events remaining, all eyes this Saturday will be
on last weekend’s Delaware APC 300 Great Canadian Race winner Peter Gibbons.
The Canadian Tire Chevy driver is second in the points heading to
Cayuga, a track he’s had so much success at over the years. Last summer,
the Stouffville, ON racer dominated the first race at the legendary oval,
and was set to win his second Super Series feature race of the season at
Cayuga, when a minor pit miscue spoiled his run.
While current points leader Don Thomson Jr. will admit to being
aware of the 89-point lead he has over Gibbons as he chases his
fifth-consecutive Super Series National crown, Gibbons, on the other hand,
says it’s all about winning races. He would welcome a third National
championship, but his focus is on collecting checkered flags.
“We’re just here to win,” said Gibbons, bluntly, as he basked in
the glow of victory lane following his sixth career win in the Labour Day
Weekend classic at Delaware, this past Sunday. “We’re gonna have a good run
there because I love Cayuga. We run better at the bigger tracks, because
there’s less trouble with traffic and lapped cars at the big ovals.”
And you don’t have to remind Gibbons that his car has fared well
in its recent outings at Cayuga. “We were stout there in both races last
year. We dominated the first one and in the second one, we led all day and
just about lapped everyone. We just had a miscue in the pits that kept us
from winning that second race.”
Thomson’s impressive points cushion means that it will take
significant problems in the final two races to keep the Home Hardware Chevy
driver from earning his unprecedented fifth National title. Peter Gibbons
knows that Thomson’s fate is in his own hands at this point, and there’s
nothing he can do about it. From Gibbons’ perspective, all he can do is win
the last two events and let the points fall where they may.
The spectator gates will open at Cayuga 2000 Speedway at 4:00 p.m.
on Saturday afternoon. Time Trials to set the grid will begin at 6:00 p.m.
The driver autograph session is scheduled to start at 7:15, while the
200-lap feature race is slated to take the green flag at 8:35 p.m. The
Outlaw Thunder Cars will also be in action at Cayuga on Saturday evening.
Their feature race will start following the conclusion of the Super Series
race.
OUT WEST: Don Thomson has to make it through two more races to secure his
fifth CASCAR National title. CASCAR Western Series racer Kevin Dowler has
things a little easier. The Edmonton, AB racer is set to earn his fifth
Western crown on Saturday evening at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, BC. The
EMCO Taurus driver merely has to qualify for, and then start, the Lordco
Auto Parts 200 at the scenic Vernon, British Columbia stock car oval in
order to make CASCAR history.
CASCAR ON TV: Watch the recent Logel’s Auto Parts 200 CASCAR Super Series
race at Peterborough Speedway this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. EST on SPORTSNET.
