silex Selects Freescale's XS110 Chipset for UWB miniPCI Module; First Japanese Vendor to Leverage UWB Technology for U.S. Products

TOKYO--Sept. 7, 2005--silex technology, Inc. (JASDAQ:6679) has developed an Ultra-Wideband (UWB)-enabled miniPCI module with Freescale Semiconductor's UWB XS110 chipset. To address the need for high-speed, wireless PC peripherals, silex will use the UWB-enabled miniPCI module in its PC peripheral line for the U.S. market.

Leveraging Freescale's commercially available direct sequence UWB (DS-UWB) chipset, silex, a leading Japanese company and provider of device-to-device networking products worldwide, will showcase the miniPCI module at the Freescale Technology Forum held this week in Tokyo.

Freescale's DS-UWB solutions are shipping to OEM customers worldwide for a variety of consumer electronics and computing products. According to West Technology Research Solutions, the overall DS-UWB component market is expected to reach $482 million (USD) by 2010 with initial deployment occurring in consumer entertainment, communications, and computing in the personal area network (PAN) arena. By 2009, annual shipments for consumer electronics applications alone are expected to reach 38 million units, according to the firm's Q3 2005 report.

"Freescale provides a turnkey solution for developers seeking to incorporate Freescale's commercial UWB into their consumer electronic products," said Martin Rofheart, director of the Ultra-Wideband Operation at Freescale. "Using our UWB development kit, silex was able to quickly and easily develop a miniPCI module that meets FCC requirements for commercial use in the U.S. And, as Japan continues to draft its regulatory policy for UWB, we look forward to providing the same turnkey solution for products sold in Japan."

The Freescale XS110 UWB chipset used in the silex miniPCI module provides a data rate of 110 Mbps to wirelessly stream video, audio and data at a range of up to 20 meters.

"Freescale's XS110 UWB chipset is both commercially available and FCC certified, which allows us to add a proven wireless solution to our peripheral products with mini-PCI modules," said Katsuhiro Yagi, silex UWB project manager. "The mini-PCI is a great first milestone in our strategy to be a leading UWB embedded technology provider."

The UWB-enabled module fits the standard miniPCI form factor. silex intends to use the module in networking products for the U.S. market. The availability of UWB-enabled consumer products for Japan is subject to regulatory processes currently underway by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC).
