TRW Integrated Safety Strategy To Be Unveiled At IAA Exhibition
DUSSELDORF, Sept. 6 -- TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. today announced plans to unveil the Company's integrated safety systems platform at the IAA exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, September 12 - 25, 2005. As the global leader in automotive safety systems, TRW has developed a suite of technologies that integrate active and passive systems designed to help prevent accidents, protect passengers, and support vehicle manufacturers in providing value to the end consumer.

John Plant, TRW Automotive president and chief executive officer, explained: "IAA represents an excellent venue for us to demonstrate our leadership in taking the advancement and integration of active and passive safety systems to the next stage.
"The basis of our integrated safety platform is to gather data from long- and short-range radar and video sensors to create a complete picture of the driving environment. This information helps enable the most appropriate engagement of integrated subsystems."
An example of TRW's integrated safety systems is represented by the company's effort to create the next step in optimized seat positioning ahead of a potential crash by combining the functions of the TRW Active Control Retractor (ACR) and TRW's Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC). In this application, the ACR -- TRW's first-to-market, actuated, reversible seatbelt pretensioner -- tightens the vehicle's seatbelts if the radar-enabled cruise control system detects impending danger. In current applications of ACR technology, as equipped in the Pre-Safe system on the S-Class and other Mercedes Benz vehicles, the ACR only engages when sensors in the vehicle's electronic stability control / brake systems determine the vehicle may be out of control.
The integration of ACC and ACR is one of numerous integrated safety technologies that TRW is developing.
Dr. Alois Seewald, engineering lead for TRW's integrated safety portfolio, explains some of the market drivers for integrated safety: "Governments are serious about reducing road traffic fatalities, and stand-alone safety systems can only go so far. To further protect the lives of driver, passenger and pedestrian the industry is moving toward integrating these subsystems.
"TRW Automotive has decades of experience in developing a broad range of active and passive safety subsystems and -- most critically -- the sensors that support them. So we are uniquely positioned with the skills and experience to not only integrate these advanced technologies, but also to manage the fusion of data from the sensors."
TRW's exhibit at the Frankfurt IAA show in September will bring TRW's safety capabilities to life through interactive simulations and presentations. The stand can be found at booth F18 in Hall 8.
