Terry Borcheller - Mosport race

so close ...

Terry Borcheller scored another podium finish in the American Le Mans
Series, but the finish understated the team's performance at Mosport
International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont.

Borcheller, of Gainesville, Ga., vaulted to the front of the GT1 class in
his Saleen S7R with a qualifying lap of one minute 13.450 seconds on the
2.459-mile road course, more than three-tenths of a second faster than the
championship-leading Corvette team. It was the first time since 2003 that a
manufacturer other than Corvette took the class pole position.

Borcheller drove the first stint of the two-hour 30-minute race and opened
up a class lead of 11 seconds. Johnny Mowlem of London, England, took over
at 55 minutes and stayed first in class until his pitstop at 1h53. The team
saved time by changing only two tires, but they were slowed by a fueling
system that takes more time than the rival Corvette equipment, dropping the
Saleen back to third during the stop. Borcheller drove an intense final
stint, closing the gap from a 12-second deficit to five seconds, but had to
settle for third place.

"I'm very proud of all the guys, but very disappointed," he said. "The car
was great. We led almost every lap, but it sounds like we might have been in
the pits a little too long on that last stop. Other than that, I think we
had 'em.

"The team tried to save time by only changing two tires, adding just a
little fuel and a quick driver change, but unfortunately, I entered the
track almost 12 seconds behind the leading Corvette and eight seconds behind
the second-place 'Vette. With only 35 minutes to go, I closed the gap to 2.8
seconds behind second place and five seconds from the leader. It was so
close and exciting – we had them!"
