CASCAR Super Series veteran Peter Gibbons wins the APC 300 Great Canadian
Race for the sixth time in his career
LONDON, ON - On Sunday afternoon at Delaware Speedway, Peter Gibbons won
the APC 300 Great Canadian Race for the sixth time in his career. It was
the third-time in a row that the Canadian Tire Chevy driver has won the
prestigious CASCAR Super Series' Labour Day Weekend classic at the London,
ON area half-mile oval.
The Stouffville, ON racer repeated his winning performance of two
years ago when he charged to victory from the 16th starting position.
Gibbons fought brake troubles throughout Sunday's race, but wouldn't give
up the hunt for the victory.
With a half-dozen laps remaining in the 300-lap feature race, Dave
Whitlock led Brad Graham, with Gibbons in third. Graham's superb run came
to an end on lap 294 when the gas tank ran dry in his Challenger / Logel's
Dodge Charger, just three miles from the finish line.
That set up the final restart, on lap 295, with Whitlock's Avenue
Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger leading Gibbons' Chevy. As the field came
up to speed to take the green flag, Gibbons dove to the inside of Whitlock
with a bold move. By the end of the lap, he had solidified his hold on the
lead.
From there, chaos broke out as the front-runners scrambled for the
win. At the start of lap 298, Gibbons led Castrol Dodge driver DJ
Kennington, Whitlock, Don Thomson Jr. and Jeff Lapcevich. Whitlock fought
back to second entering turn 1 and set his sights on Gibbons. But as the
pack entered turn 3 on the last lap, Whitlock washed up high in the turn
and lost several spots. He would cross the line in eighth.
The mad scramble continued as Kennington lost several positions,
falling to sixth at the checkered flag. Super Series points leader Don
Thomson brought his Home Hardware Chevy home in second-place, which was a
spectacular result considering he slammed into an infield retaining wall,
following contact with another driver, with just 50 laps to go. Jeff
Lapcevich emerged with a third-place finish in his Fastline / EMCEA
Transport / Tim Hortons Chevy. It was his second career podium result at
Delaware.
"We had no brakes on the car about 100 laps into the race, and I
thought 'oh no'," said Gibbons, in victory lane. "But we just kept the car
going and put together a good run at the end. We tried to stay clean, but
we got into a few guys because I couldn't stop the car. I got a run on Dave
[Whitlock] there on the restart and he tried to muscle me down, but I'm
here to win. I don't want to finish second so I held it right in there."

NEXT RACE: The CASCAR Super Series returns to action next Saturday (Sept.
10) for a make-up event at Cayuga 2000 Speedway, located south of Hamilton, ON.
