Calaman Wins Trail Motors 75 Lapper at SSP
Calaman Wins the Trail Motors Super Sportsman Championship on Sunday Night,
Eichelberger Wins the Points Title
Newberrytown, PA (September 4, 2005) - Dave Calaman became the first
repeat Super Sportsman winner in Sunday’s 75-lap Trail Motors Championship at the
Susquehanna Speedway Park. In other feature activity, Sam Leonard Jr. scored
a win in the20-lap Street Stock Car feature. Eric Hollenbach won the Four
Cylinder Stock Car feature.
The Trail Motors Super Sportsman Championship began with Dave Calaman and
Russ Mitten on the front row. Calaman jumped out early to lead the first 15
laps until a yellow flag for a spinning Aaron Eichelberger was displayed. On
the restart, Calaman continued to lead over Pat Cannon and Frankie Herr.
Herr pulled a slider two laps later on Cannon to take the second spot.
On lap 19, Dave Finch brought out the caution for a spin in turn three.
Four laps later, Rich Eichelberger stopped in turn four with engine failure,
possibly ending his hopes for the 2005 SSP track championship. With a 22nd
place finish Eichelberger could only sit on the sidelines and hope for Steve
Wilbur to finish third or worse and for Richie Hartman to not win the event in
order to win the SSP track championship.
A fuel stop was ordered by the officials for refueling only on lap 23.
After the restart, Cannon returned the favor on Herr two laps later for second
spot. While Cannon and Herr battled, Calaman opened up a straightaway lead
before he began lapping cars.
Lap 33 saw Aaron Eichelberger backing into the turn one guardrail, once
again bringing out the yellow flag. Two laps later another caution for Dave
Socks, who stopped on the front straight. On the restart, Richie Hartman got
together with Finch in turn one. The spin relegated Hartman to the rear to
once again try to make it to the lead in order to win the championship.
As laps wound down towards the mandatory fuel stop at lap 50, Danny Hager
moved past Herr and Cannon into second place and then set his sights on the
leader, Dave Calaman. Three laps from the break, Smokey Snelbaker flipped in
turn three and four after losing his brakes. On the restart, Hager pressured
Calaman but eased up a bit to ride to the break. At the mandatory break on
lap 50, Calaman led over Hager, Cannon, Herr and Carmen Perigo. All cars were
permitted to the pits for 10 minutes to make any changes necessary for the
final 25 laps of the event.
Hager, Herr and Jason Frye were all penalized to the rear of the restart
order for not returning to the track within the 10 minute time window. Herr was
late due to brake problems. On the restart, Cannon lined up behind Calaman
once again. Herr brought out the yellow on lap 52 when he intentionally
stopped on the backstretch. Herr was black flagged from the event.
With 10 laps remaining, Cannon began to real in Calaman every lap and
trailed by one car length on lap 69. Calaman bobbled in Turn one on lap 70
allowing Cannon to get by, but at the same time, Gregg Foster’s car erupted into
flames due to blown motor. Foster escaped injury, but the red flag put Cannon
back behind Calaman again since he did not complete the lap after the pass.
When the green flew, Cannon again gave chase to the leader. With one to go
Cannon closed in on Calaman’s rear bumper but was unable to get by for the
win. Calaman led all 75 laps to become the first repeat Super Sportsman
feature winner of the season and picked up $2,500 for the win. “Without the red
flag with five to go, this win wouldn’t have happened,?? said Calaman in
victory lane. Cannon came home in second, followed by Carmen Perigo, Steve Wilbur
and Richie Hartman. Rich Eichelberger was declared the 2005 SSP Track
Champion with a slim lead of 3 points over Wilbur at the end.
In Street Stock feature action, Sam Leonard Jr. started on the pole position
and wired the field to pick up his second SSP feature event of the season.
However, Leonard was challenged by runner-up Paul Morgan many times during
the event. Craig Morgan finished third followed by newly crowned 2005 SSP
Street Stock Track Champion Wes Alleman and George Eash in fifth. Leonard and
Kory Sites won ther heats with Rich Bossinger winning the consolation event.
In the Four Cylinder Stock Car feature event, Eric Hollenbach also started
on the pole position and led every lap to pick up his first SSP win of 2005.
Coming from a tenth starting spot, Grant Adams finished second, followed by
Tim Burkholder, Ed Hollenbach and Steven Dove. Four Cylinder Stock Car heats
went to Hollenbach and Leroy Long.
