NHRA Kurt Johnson Sunday Update: KJ Qualifies Third for the
U.S. Nationals
Event: 51st Annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals
Day/Date: Sunday, September 4, 2005
Location: Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis, IN
During Friday’s first qualifying session for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals,
Kurt Johnson powered his ACDelco Cobalt Racing through the quarter-mile in a
very impressive 6.728 seconds with a top speed of 205.38 mph. Having
virtually guaranteed themselves a strong starting position in Monday’s final
eliminations, the Johnson team used their final four attempts at Indianapolis Raceway
Park to fine tune their set-up for race day.
In the end, Johnson’s opening run remained his run of record, and earned the
second-generation racer the third starting position. Having gathered
valuable information on their race day under varying conditions, Johnson is
quietly optimistic as he pursues his third win at “The Big Go.??
“After that strong opening run on Friday, we used the final four qualifying
sessions to try different things. We tweaked it a little bit for Saturday
morning and ran a 6.74, which wasn’t bad, but fell off a little when compared to
the best times, so we started throwing things at it from different angles,
none of which really gelled the way we would have liked it to.
“For tomorrow, we will go back to our initial set-up. We’ll tweak our
ACDelco Cobalt a little for the conditions and just run our race. Hopefully, we’
ll be able to go a few rounds, make it to the final and see if we can make a
great day here in Indianapolis.??
