AAA Texas: Weekend Gas Watch; $3 Pump Prices
HOUSTON--Sept. 2, 2005--Days after Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast region, pump prices in Texas and across the United States have been escalating at a record pace to three dollars a gallon and above, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch.According to a survey by the Oil Price Information Service, the Texas average price for regular self-serve jumped five cents this week to a new record high of $2.628. "However, motorists across Texas and the U.S. are seeing much higher prices at the pumps -- $3 and above for a gallon of regular self-serve," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "We've heard of increases in Texas as high as 50 cents a gallon overnight following Hurricane Katrina."
"We're advising motorists not to top-off their tanks," said Rougeau. "With the price of gasoline escalating, motorists can conserve gas by making sure their vehicle is routinely maintained, consolidating trips, car pooling, using mass transit and for short trips try bicycling or walking."
The national average for regular self-serve gasoline also set a new record high of $2.680 a gallon.
AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at popular destinations for automobile trips.
