Crosby weathers storm, prepares to race in California
Eddyville, Ky. – Kim Crosby has spent the last few days doing what everyone else who lives in the New Orleans area has been doing, surviving.
Crosby lives in Slidell, La., on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain. She and her husband Chris evacuated on Sunday and rode out Hurricane Katrina in Vicksburg, Miss. on Monday. She was able to return to the area on Tuesday and verify that her house had survived the storm. But even so, it will be at least a month before the area is habitable again
“I’m one of the lucky ones,” said Crosby. “We were able to get out of the path of the storm and we’ll have something to come home to. So many people didn’t have a way to leave and now are being forced to evacuate as their homes are being destroyed by the flood. I cannot fathom what they have had to endure, what they are still enduring.
“My heart goes out to all of those people who are still stuck in New Orleans.”
Even with the trials of the past few days, Crosby said she wants to race this weekend.
“I thought about it long and hard over the past few days but in the end it was pretty clear to me,” Crosby said. “There is nothing we could do at home, even if they didn’t want everyone to leave the area.”
