SRS Labs' Circle Surround Automotive(TM) Featured in Leading Automotive Entertainment DSPs

SRS Circle Surround Automotive in New Line of Automotive Entertainment ICs

SANTA ANA, Calif., Aug. 31 -- SRS Labs, Inc. , one of the world's leading providers of audio technology solutions, today announced that Philips, a leading provider of automotive DSPs, has selected SRS Circle Surround Automotive ("CS Auto") surround decoding solution for its SAF7730 series of automotive radio chips. This step is part of SRS Labs' initiative to penetrate the automotive market by offering technologies in leading automotive DSPs.

"We are pleased to work with Philips and offer our new Circle Surround Automotive technology solution on their platform," said Lenka Koloma, director strategic IC partners and sales for SRS Labs. "By working with Philips to offer CS Auto in the leading automotive DSP chip, we are able to immediately reach and support major OEMs, tier one and aftermarket manufacturers to enable them to bring the home theater experience to the car."

Circle Surround Automotive creates a thrilling in-vehicle surround sound experience from any audio material over a four-channel or larger speaker system. With CS Auto, great sound is not limited to a single sweet spot within the vehicle. It also delivers surround sound from any audio source, including mono or stereo traditional radio broadcasts, satellite radio, digital broadcasts from HD Radio(TM), standard CD and compressed digital music from portable digital audio players. It is the only multichannel decoding solution that includes customizable enhancement techniques as a standard to solve the unique audio challenges of the automotive environment. CS Auto can even create the perception of a center speaker if one is not installed. It not only brings surround sound to a vehicle -- it also improves the quality of the audio experience.

"As one of the leading providers of the most advanced audio technologies available, SRS Labs is an important partner in our efforts to bring a compelling audio platform to the automotive industry," said Guido Thamm, product marketing manager at Philips Semiconductors.

The SAF7730 chip can be coupled with Philips' HD Radio base-band chip to further enhance the surround sound experience in the car. Circle Surround encoding was the first certified surround solution for the HD Radio technology from iBiquity. HD Radio enables digital radio signals to ride the same airwaves as existing analog AM/FM radio signals. By using CS Auto in the SAF7730 chip to decode HD Radio CS encoded content, the listener will enjoy the best surround sound experience.

The key techniques and features of CS Auto, which can be customized and made available as a user option by the OEM include:

SRS FOCUS(R) Technology elevates the sound image so that it is perceived
to be at a normal listening height compensating for non-optimally placed
speakers placed low in the car door or under the dashboard. The sound is
very natural since FOCUS does not use phase or time shifting. FOCUS is
adjustable by the manufacturer to provide optimum sound image placement
based on the car design. This flexibility enables OEMs to deliver the
best audio performance for each car model's speaker configuration and may
eliminate the need for installing tweeters.

SRS TruBass(R) Technology is a patented psychoacoustic technology that
produces the perception of deep, rich bass. It can be applied to the
speakers and/or subwoofer to produce the perception of improved low
frequency performance up to an octave below the F0 of the speaker
drivers. The manufacturer can adjust the amount of TruBass processing in
the front channels, rear channels and subwoofer depending on the speaker
size. This improved bass can eliminate the need for a costly subwoofer
   or larger size speakers.

   Number of Channels
CS Auto delivers up to 6.1 channels of audio from mono, stereo,
matrix-encoded or Circle Surround-encoded material. The number of
channels can be customized for the number of speakers installed in the
   vehicle.

   Channel Mixing
Our Mix-to-Rear function allows front and center channel contents to be
mixed to the surround channels. This enables passengers in large
vehicles to also enjoy the vocals that normally are heard through the
   front center speaker.

   Phantom Center Speaker
CS Auto creates a compelling phantom center speaker if a physical center
   speaker is not present.
